Alprazolam (Xanax) is one of the most commonly prescribed — and misused — benzodiazepines in the United States. Nationally, ~50 million benzodiazepine prescriptions are filled each year, and Xanax consistently ranks among the top prescribed medications in this class.
Emergency department visits involving benzodiazepines have increased significantly in recent years. Most alarming, Xanax combined with opioids is involved in a large percentage of overdose deaths — ~14% of opioid overdose fatalities also involve benzodiazepines. In New Hampshire, where the opioid crisis has hit especially hard, the risk of combined benzo-opioid use is a growing public health concern.
These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who need access to safe, medically supervised benzodiazepine taper programs.

Because Xanax is prescribed by a doctor, many people don’t recognize their use has crossed into dependence. A legitimate prescription doesn’t prevent addiction. Understand that physical dependence can develop in as little as a few weeks of daily use, even at prescribed doses.
Unlike many other substances, abruptly stopping Xanax can cause seizures and other life-threatening complications. Never flush their medication, hide their pills, or pressure them to stop suddenly. Medical supervision is essential for safe withdrawal.
Communicate clear limits: “I love you, and I won’t participate in behaviors that support your dependence.” Follow through consistently. This might mean not helping them obtain extra prescriptions or not making excuses for their behavior.
Choose a time when they’re clear-headed. Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed changes and I’m worried about you” rather than “You’re addicted.” Offer specific help — like calling Trailhead together to discuss safe taper options.
Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, join a family support group, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, family systems, and substance use education.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for people struggling with Xanax dependence to resist treatment — especially when they have a legitimate prescription. The fact that a doctor prescribed it often reinforces denial. This doesn’t mean recovery is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.
Our family support program provides education and community for anyone affected by a loved one’s Xanax addiction.
Topics include codependency, family systems, substance use education, and building a recovery-supportive home.
