The Reality in New Hampshire

Benzodiazepine Use in New Hampshire

Benzodiazepine prescriptions remain high nationally despite growing awareness of addiction risk. According to the CDC, ~67 million benzodiazepine prescriptions are dispensed annually in the United States, making them among the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications.

Combining benzodiazepines with opioids significantly increases overdose risk. In New Hampshire, ~30% of opioid overdose deaths involve benzodiazepines as a contributing factor. Many benzodiazepine dependencies begin with legitimate prescriptions — patients develop physical dependence even when taking medication as directed by their doctor.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who need access to compassionate, medically supervised treatment.

For Family Members

How to Help a Loved One with Benzodiazepine Addiction

Understand the Prescription Origin

Many benzodiazepine addictions begin with a legitimate prescription for anxiety, insomnia, or panic disorder. Understand that physical dependence can develop even when taking the medication exactly as prescribed. This is a medical condition, not a character flaw.

Never Encourage Cold Turkey

Unlike many other substances, abruptly stopping benzodiazepines can be life-threatening. Seizures, severe withdrawal, and medical emergencies can result from sudden cessation. Always advocate for a medically supervised, gradual taper rather than quitting without professional guidance.

Support a Gradual Approach

Recovery from benzodiazepine addiction is often slower than other substances because of the required taper period. Be patient with the process — a safe taper may take weeks to months. Encourage continued therapy and celebrate incremental progress.

Have the Conversation

Choose a calm moment. Use “I” statements: “I’m concerned about your dependence on this medication” rather than accusations. Acknowledge that they may have started taking benzos for real symptoms and offer to explore treatment options together.

Take Care of Yourself

Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, join a support group like Nar-Anon, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, prescription medication dependence, and recovery support.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with benzodiazepine addiction to resist treatment — especially when the medication was originally prescribed by a doctor. This doesn’t mean recovery is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.

A structured, guided intervention led by a professional can help your loved one see the impact of their benzodiazepine dependence on themselves and the people they care about. Interventionists are trained in compassionate, non-confrontational approaches — especially important when the person believes they “need” the medication.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change — helping them arrive at the decision to seek help on their own terms.
Follow through on consequences you’ve communicated. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change. Be specific about what you will and won’t accept, and maintain those limits consistently.
People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing. Recognizing which stage they’re in helps you respond appropriately.
If there’s immediate danger — seizures, suicidal thoughts, severe withdrawal symptoms, or risk of harm — call 911 immediately. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Our admissions team can also guide you through next steps and discuss safe, supervised taper options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Benzodiazepine Addiction Treatment FAQ

Abruptly stopping benzodiazepines can cause life-threatening seizures and severe withdrawal symptoms. A gradual, medically supervised taper — slowly reducing the dose over weeks to months — is the only safe way to discontinue benzos. Our on-site Nurse Practitioner manages every taper individually.
Taper length depends on the type of benzo, dosage, and duration of use. Tapers typically range from several weeks to several months. Rushing the process increases seizure risk, so safety always comes first. Your NP adjusts the pace based on your symptoms.
The physical dependence is the same regardless of the source. Many people develop benzodiazepine addiction from legitimate prescriptions. Whether the benzos were prescribed or obtained another way, the taper and treatment process is similar. We treat both without judgment.
Benzo withdrawal can include severe rebound anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, tremors, and in serious cases, seizures. This is why medical supervision is critical. Our NP monitors withdrawal symptoms closely and adjusts the taper to keep you safe throughout the process.
CBT and DBT skills are highly effective for managing anxiety without medication. We teach distress tolerance, grounding techniques, breathwork, mindfulness, and cognitive restructuring. Many clients discover they can manage anxiety better with these tools than they ever did with benzos.
Most major plans cover benzodiazepine addiction treatment. We’re in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health, Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense. Our team verifies benefits in minutes and handles prior authorizations.
Yes. We offer individual family therapy sessions plus monthly Zoom education groups. Family involvement is especially important with benzodiazepine addiction, as loved ones need to understand the taper process and provide informed support.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon-Thu) is designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP and telehealth options. The gradual taper approach allows most clients to maintain daily responsibilities during treatment.
Completing the taper is a major milestone, but ongoing support is essential. We plan aftercare from day one: step-down to IOP or OP, continued anxiety management skills, alumni program, external therapist referrals, and family support groups.
On-site NP managing individualized taper protocols, concurrent therapy during the entire taper process, family-style environment, flexible scheduling, staff with both professional credentials and lived recovery experience, and same-day admission when clinically appropriate.
