OCD affects approximately 2.3% of the U.S. population at some point in their lives — that’s roughly 1 in 40 adults. Despite its prevalence, OCD remains one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions.
On average, it takes 14–17 years from symptom onset for someone with OCD to receive proper treatment. Many suffer in silence due to shame or the mistaken belief that OCD is just about being neat or organized. The WHO has ranked OCD among the top 10 most disabling conditions worldwide in terms of lost income and reduced quality of life.
These aren’t just statistics — they represent individuals and families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across New Hampshire who deserve access to specialized, evidence-based OCD treatment.

Understand that OCD is a neurobiological condition, not a personality quirk or choice. Learn how the OCD cycle works — the obsessions trigger anxiety, and compulsions provide temporary relief but reinforce the pattern. Knowledge helps you respond with compassion.
Family accommodation — participating in rituals, providing reassurance, or adjusting routines around OCD — is natural but ultimately reinforces the disorder. Work with a therapist to gradually reduce accommodations while maintaining a supportive relationship.
When your loved one asks “Are you sure it’s safe?” or “Did I lock the door?”, reassurance feels helpful but feeds the OCD cycle. Instead, acknowledge their distress: “I know this feels scary, and I trust you can handle the uncertainty.”
Choose a calm moment. Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you seem really stressed” rather than “You need to stop doing that.” Offer specific help — like calling Trailhead together or driving them to their first appointment.
Living with someone who has OCD can be exhausting. Consider therapy for yourself, connect with OCD support communities like the IOCDF, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering OCD accommodation, family dynamics, and mental health education.
