Trauma is far more common than most people realize. According to research, approximately 70% of adults in the United States have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime — that’s more than 223 million people.
Of those who experience trauma, roughly 6% of the U.S. population will develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives. In New Hampshire, the opioid crisis, economic stressors, and high rates of adverse childhood experiences mean that many thousands of residents are living with unresolved trauma that affects their daily functioning, relationships, and wellbeing.
These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who deserve access to compassionate, trauma-informed care.

Understand that trauma responses are normal reactions to abnormal events, not signs of weakness. Learn how trauma affects the brain and nervous system, and why healing takes time. Knowledge helps you respond with patience rather than frustration.
People healing from trauma need to feel safe and in control. Avoid pressuring them to “just get over it” or share details before they are ready. Let them set the pace. Your role is to be a steady, predictable presence.
Trauma survivors may need more space, quiet time, or control over their environment. Respect these needs without taking them personally. Their boundaries are part of their healing, not a rejection of you.
When they do share, listen without trying to fix or minimize their experience. Statements like “I believe you” and “That sounds really difficult” are more helpful than advice. Your presence matters more than your words.
Supporting a trauma survivor can be emotionally taxing. Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, set your own boundaries, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
