The Reality in New Hampshire

Depression in New Hampshire

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States. Nationally, 1 in 5 adults experience a depressive episode each year — and New Hampshire is no exception.

According to SAMHSA data, approximately 21.5% of NH adults reported experiencing a major depressive episode in the past year. Among young adults ages 18–25, that number climbs even higher to 29.3%. New Hampshire also faces a shortage of mental health providers, meaning many residents go untreated for months or years.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who need access to compassionate, evidence-based treatment for depression.

How to Help a Loved One with Depression

Learn What Depression Really Is

Understand that depression is a medical condition, not laziness or a character flaw. It involves changes in brain chemistry that affect mood, energy, and motivation. Learning this helps you respond with empathy rather than frustration when they can’t “just snap out of it.”

Destigmatize Getting Help

Many people with depression feel ashamed or believe they should be able to handle it alone. Normalize seeking professional help by talking openly about mental health. Share that treatment works — most people with depression improve significantly with the right combination of therapy and support.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Watch for changes in sleep, appetite, social withdrawal, loss of interest in activities, persistent sadness, or talk of feeling hopeless. Take any mention of suicide seriously — ask directly and listen without judgment.

Offer Practical Support

Depression makes everyday tasks feel overwhelming. Offer to help with specific things: “Can I drive you to your appointment?” or “I’ll call Trailhead with you right now.” Concrete offers are more helpful than “Let me know if you need anything.”

Take Care of Yourself

Supporting someone with depression can be emotionally exhausting. Consider therapy for yourself, set healthy boundaries, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering depression awareness, communication strategies, and building a supportive home environment.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with depression to resist treatment. They may not believe they deserve help, or the depression itself may drain their motivation to seek it. This doesn’t mean recovery is impossible.

Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you seem different lately and I’m worried about you.” Avoid ultimatums or guilt. People with depression often feel like a burden already — pressuring them can increase withdrawal.
Depression depletes motivation and energy. Make it as easy as possible: offer to make the call, handle insurance verification, provide transportation, or sit with them during the intake process. Removing logistical obstacles can make all the difference.
Full-time treatment can feel overwhelming. Suggest starting with a single phone call or a telehealth session from home. Trailhead offers virtual options at every program level, which can feel less intimidating than in-person treatment initially.
Change rarely happens after a single conversation. Continue showing up, checking in, and gently expressing your concern. Consistency builds trust. People with depression need to know you won’t give up on them even when they want to give up on themselves.
If your loved one expresses suicidal thoughts, has a plan to harm themselves, or is in immediate danger, call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. Our admissions team can also help guide next steps and discuss options at any time.
