Understanding Trauma

Trauma in America & New Hampshire

Trauma is far more common than most people realize. According to research, approximately 70% of adults in the United States have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime — that’s more than 223 million people.

Of those who experience trauma, roughly 6% of the U.S. population will develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives. In New Hampshire, the opioid crisis, economic stressors, and high rates of adverse childhood experiences mean that many thousands of residents are living with unresolved trauma that affects their daily functioning, relationships, and wellbeing.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who deserve access to compassionate, trauma-informed care.

How to Support a Loved One Healing from Trauma

Educate Yourself About Trauma

Understand that trauma responses are normal reactions to abnormal events, not signs of weakness. Learn how trauma affects the brain and nervous system, and why healing takes time. Knowledge helps you respond with patience rather than frustration.

Create Safety, Not Pressure

People healing from trauma need to feel safe and in control. Avoid pressuring them to “just get over it” or share details before they are ready. Let them set the pace. Your role is to be a steady, predictable presence.

Respect Their Boundaries

Trauma survivors may need more space, quiet time, or control over their environment. Respect these needs without taking them personally. Their boundaries are part of their healing, not a rejection of you.

Listen Without Fixing

When they do share, listen without trying to fix or minimize their experience. Statements like “I believe you” and “That sounds really difficult” are more helpful than advice. Your presence matters more than your words.

Take Care of Yourself

Supporting a trauma survivor can be emotionally taxing. Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, set your own boundaries, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They’re Not Ready for Treatment?

It’s common for people living with unresolved trauma to resist treatment. Fear, avoidance, and distrust are natural trauma responses — not signs that healing is impossible.

Avoidance is a core trauma symptom. Your loved one may resist treatment because talking about their experiences feels terrifying, not because they don’t want help. Understanding this helps you respond with compassion rather than frustration.
Many people fear they will be forced to relive their trauma. Let them know that trauma-informed care at Trailhead is always client-led — no one will ever force them to talk about anything they are not ready to discuss. They set the pace.
Instead of asking them to address “the trauma,” frame it around the symptoms: “I’ve noticed you haven’t been sleeping” or “You seem on edge a lot.” Focusing on daily struggles feels less threatening than asking someone to revisit painful memories.
The first phone call is often the hardest part. Offer to call Trailhead together, drive them to their first appointment, or simply sit with them while they take that step. Practical support removes barriers that feel insurmountable.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or risk of harm to others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our admissions team can also guide you through next steps and help you support your loved one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trauma-Informed Care FAQ

We treat all forms of trauma including childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), sexual assault, domestic violence, combat trauma, accidents, loss, medical trauma, and complex/developmental trauma. You do not need a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma-informed care.
Never. Trauma processing at Trailhead is always client-led. You set the pace, and your therapist follows your lead. You will never be pressured to share details you are not ready to discuss. We start with safety and stabilization before any deeper processing work.
CPT is an evidence-based therapy specifically developed for trauma and PTSD. It helps you identify and challenge “stuck points” — unhelpful beliefs that developed after trauma, such as self-blame, guilt, or beliefs that the world is entirely unsafe. CPT typically runs 12 sessions and has strong research support.
PHP typically lasts 20–30 days, IOP runs 60–90 days, and ongoing outpatient support continues as needed. Trauma healing is not linear — some people make significant progress quickly, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your clinician will work with you on pacing.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon-Thu) is designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP and telehealth options with flexible daily scheduling.
Most major plans cover mental health treatment including trauma-informed care. We’re in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health, Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense. Our team verifies benefits in minutes.
Medication is always optional and your choice. Our on-site Nurse Practitioner can prescribe SSRIs for mood stabilization, prazosin for trauma-related nightmares, and other medications as clinically appropriate. Medication is always combined with therapy, never used alone.
Yes. We offer individual family therapy sessions plus monthly Zoom education groups covering trauma responses, family dynamics, and building a healing-supportive home. Open to any family member 18+.
We plan aftercare from day one: step-down to IOP or OP, alumni program, external therapist referrals specializing in trauma, continued family support groups, and long-term wellness coordination.
Client-led processing (never forced), specialized CPT and trauma-focused CBT, flexible scheduling, somatic approaches like breathwork and yoga, 12:1 counselor caseloads for individualized attention, and same-day admission when clinically appropriate.
