Understanding PTSD

PTSD by the Numbers

Post-traumatic stress disorder affects approximately ~6% of the U.S. population at some point in their lives, according to the National Center for PTSD. Women are about twice as likely as men to develop PTSD.

PTSD frequently co-occurs with other conditions: up to 50% of people with PTSD also struggle with substance use disorders, and rates of co-occurring depression exceed 48%. Without treatment, PTSD symptoms can persist for years or even decades, affecting relationships, work, and overall quality of life.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent individuals and families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across New Hampshire who need access to compassionate, trauma-informed treatment.

For Family Members

How to Support a Loved One with PTSD

Learn About PTSD

Understand that PTSD is a neurological response to trauma, not a sign of weakness. Learn how trauma changes the brain’s threat-detection system and why symptoms like hypervigilance, flashbacks, and avoidance are survival responses — not choices.

Create Safety, Not Pressure

People with PTSD need to feel safe before they can heal. Avoid pressuring them to “just talk about it” or minimizing their experience. Let them know you’re there when they’re ready. Consistency and patience matter more than grand gestures.

Recognize Triggers

Learn to identify situations, sounds, or environments that may trigger your loved one’s PTSD symptoms. Help create a supportive environment by reducing known triggers at home and having a plan for when symptoms arise unexpectedly.

Encourage Professional Help

Gently suggest treatment when the time feels right. Use “I” statements: “I care about you and I’ve noticed you’re struggling” rather than “You need to get help.” Offer specific support — like calling Trailhead together or driving them to their first appointment.

Take Care of Yourself

Supporting someone with PTSD can be emotionally exhausting. Consider therapy for yourself, seek support from others who understand, and maintain your own routines. Your wellbeing matters too — you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering how PTSD affects relationships, communication strategies, and building a healing-supportive home.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They’re Not Ready for Treatment?

It’s common for people with PTSD to avoid seeking help — avoidance is a core symptom of the disorder. This doesn’t mean healing is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.

Avoidance of trauma reminders — including treatment itself — is one of the hallmark symptoms of PTSD. Resistance to therapy doesn’t mean they don’t want to get better. The brain’s protective mechanisms are working overtime to prevent re-experiencing pain.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Share specific observations about how their symptoms are affecting their life. Let them know treatment doesn’t mean they have to talk about trauma right away — modern approaches start with safety and stabilization.
Sometimes the barrier isn’t willingness but overwhelm. Offer to make the call, drive them to the appointment, or help with insurance verification. Removing practical barriers can make the first step feel manageable.
People move through stages of readiness at their own pace. Planting the seed that effective treatment exists — and that they don’t have to suffer alone — can be powerful even if they’re not ready today. Keep the door open without pushing.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or risk of harm to others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our admissions team can also guide you through next steps and discuss how to approach your loved one.
