The Reality in New Hampshire

Opioid Use in New Hampshire

New Hampshire has one of the highest per-capita rates of opioid-related deaths in the nation. The crisis has devastated communities across the state, with fentanyl now involved in over 70% of opioid overdose deaths in NH.

Approximately 1,200+ NH residents have died from opioid overdoses since 2020. The synthetic opioid fentanyl has transformed the crisis — appearing in counterfeit pills, heroin, and even non-opioid drug supplies, making every use potentially fatal.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who need access to compassionate, evidence-based opioid treatment.

How to Help a Loved One with Opioid Addiction

Learn About Opioid Addiction & Overdose Risk

Understand that opioid addiction is a medical condition, not a moral failing. Opioids physically rewire the brain’s reward system, making quitting without medical help extremely difficult. Learn about fentanyl contamination and the real risk of fatal overdose.

Get Naloxone (Narcan) & Learn to Use It

Naloxone saves lives. It reverses opioid overdoses in minutes and is available at most NH pharmacies without a prescription. Keep it accessible and learn the signs of overdose: slow or stopped breathing, blue lips, unresponsiveness.

Set Boundaries Without Ultimatums

Communicate clear limits: “I love you, and I won’t participate in behaviors that support your addiction.” Follow through consistently. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change without pushing them away.

Have the Conversation — Timing Matters

Choose a time when they’re not under the influence. Use “I” statements: “I’m scared of losing you” rather than “You’re ruining your life.” Mention that MAT like Suboxone can make withdrawal manageable. Offer to call Trailhead together.

Take Care of Yourself

Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, join a support group like Nar-Anon, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, family systems, and substance use education.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with opioid addiction to resist treatment. The fear of withdrawal alone can keep someone from seeking help — but MAT options like Suboxone make the process far more manageable.

A structured, guided intervention led by a professional can break through denial and help your loved one see the impact of their opioid use on themselves and the people they care about. With opioids, the urgency is heightened — every use carries overdose risk. Interventionists are trained in compassionate, non-confrontational approaches.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change — helping them arrive at the decision to seek help on their own terms.
Follow through on consequences you’ve communicated. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change. Be specific about what you will and won’t accept, and maintain those limits consistently.
People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing. Recognizing which stage they’re in helps you respond appropriately.
If there’s immediate danger — suspected overdose, slowed breathing, blue lips, or unresponsiveness — call 911 immediately and administer Narcan (naloxone) if available. For non-emergencies, call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our admissions team can also guide you through next steps and discuss intervention options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Opioid Addiction Treatment FAQ

Opioids include prescription painkillers (oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl), heroin, and synthetic versions like illicit fentanyl. They bind to receptors in the brain that control pain and pleasure, creating intense euphoria. Over time, the brain adapts and requires the drug just to feel normal, leading to physical dependence and addiction.
We offer the most comprehensive MAT options for opioid addiction: Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), Subutex (buprenorphine), Vivitrol (naltrexone injection), and Methadone referral coordination. Our on-site Nurse Practitioner works with each client to determine the best medication approach.
Opioid withdrawal typically begins 6–24 hours after the last dose and peaks within 1–3 days. Symptoms include muscle aches, restlessness, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cold flashes, and insomnia. With MAT (like Suboxone), these symptoms can be significantly reduced, making the process much more manageable.
Both reduce cravings and withdrawal, but they work differently. Suboxone is a partial agonist (it partially activates opioid receptors), can be prescribed in-office, and has a “ceiling effect” that reduces overdose risk. Methadone is a full agonist, typically dispensed daily at a clinic, and may be better for severe addictions. Our NP helps determine which is right for you.
We educate all clients and family members on naloxone (Narcan) use and can help coordinate access. Narcan is also available without a prescription at most NH pharmacies. We strongly recommend all opioid recovery households keep naloxone on hand as a life-saving precaution.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon-Thu) is designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP and telehealth options with flexible daily scheduling. MAT like Suboxone allows you to function normally while in treatment.
Most major plans cover opioid addiction treatment, including MAT. We’re in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health, Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense. Our team verifies benefits in minutes.
Yes. We offer individual family therapy sessions plus monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, family systems, opioid education, and naloxone training. Open to any family member 18+. Family involvement significantly improves long-term outcomes.
We plan aftercare from day one: ongoing MAT management, step-down to IOP or OP, alumni program, external therapist referrals, continued family support groups, and sober living coordination. Many clients continue MAT for months or years as part of their long-term recovery plan.
Comprehensive MAT options (Suboxone, Subutex, Vivitrol, Methadone), family-style environment, flexible scheduling, staff with both professional credentials and lived recovery experience, 12:1 counselor caseloads, and same-day admission when clinically appropriate.
