The Reality in New Hampshire

Mental Health in New Hampshire

Mental illness affects millions of Americans. Nationally, 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition in any given year — yet approximately ~60% of those affected do not receive treatment.

In New Hampshire, mental health challenges are widespread across every community. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions impact daily life, relationships, and productivity. The treatment gap means thousands of adults in the state are struggling without the help they need.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who deserve access to compassionate, evidence-based mental health care.

For Family Members

How to Help a Loved One with Mental Health Challenges

Educate Yourself First

Understand that mental health conditions are medical conditions, not character flaws. Learn about depression, anxiety, and other conditions — understanding how they affect the brain helps you respond with compassion rather than frustration.

Listen Without Judgment

Create a safe space for your loved one to share. Avoid minimizing their experience with phrases like “just cheer up” or “you’ll get over it.” Active listening shows you take their struggles seriously.

Set Boundaries with Compassion

Supporting someone with mental health challenges doesn’t mean sacrificing your own wellbeing. Communicate clear limits while expressing love: “I care about you, and I want us both to be healthy.”

Encourage Professional Help

Use “I” statements: “I’m worried about you” rather than “You need help.” Offer specific support — like calling Trailhead together or driving them to their first appointment.

Take Care of Yourself

Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, join a support group like NAMI Family-to-Family, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering communication, boundaries, and mental health education.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with mental health conditions to resist treatment. Stigma, fear, and the conditions themselves can be barriers. This doesn’t mean healing is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.

Many people resist treatment because of stigma. Normalize seeking help by sharing that mental health treatment is no different than seeing a doctor for a physical condition. One in five adults experiences mental illness — it is far more common than most people realize.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Focus on what you’ve observed — changes in mood, sleep, energy — and how it worries you. Help them arrive at the decision to seek help on their own terms.
The first step is often the hardest. Offer to make the phone call together, drive them to an appointment, or sit with them during an intake. Removing logistical barriers can make a big difference in someone’s willingness to try.
People move through stages of readiness at their own pace. Your loved one may not be ready today, but your consistent support and compassion plant seeds for future change. Keep the door open without pressuring.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or risk of harm to others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our admissions team can also guide you through next steps at any time.
