The Reality in America

Anxiety Disorders in the United States

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in the United States, affecting approximately 40 million adults each year — nearly 19% of the population. Despite being highly treatable, only about 36.9% of those affected receive treatment.

In New Hampshire, mental health challenges are particularly pressing. The state ranks among the highest for anxiety prevalence, with 1 in 5 adults reporting symptoms consistent with an anxiety disorder. The COVID-19 pandemic further increased rates of anxiety across the region, with many adults experiencing symptoms for the first time.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent people in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across New England who deserve access to compassionate, evidence-based mental health treatment.

How to Help a Loved One with Anxiety

Educate Yourself First

Understand that anxiety disorders are medical conditions, not weakness or overreacting. Learn how anxiety affects the brain and nervous system, and why “just relax” or “stop worrying” isn’t helpful. Knowledge helps you respond with patience rather than frustration.

Validate Without Enabling Avoidance

There’s a difference between validating someone’s feelings and helping them avoid everything that triggers anxiety. Acknowledge their fear is real, but gently encourage them to face situations rather than retreat. Avoidance reinforces anxiety over time.

Be Patient and Consistent

Recovery from anxiety isn’t linear. There will be good days and setbacks. Stay supportive through both. Avoid expressing frustration when they struggle — your patience is one of the most powerful forms of support you can offer.

Encourage Professional Help

Use gentle, non-judgmental language: “I’ve noticed you seem stressed lately, and I want to help” rather than “You need to see someone.” Offer specific help — like calling Trailhead together or driving them to their first appointment.

Take Care of Yourself

Supporting someone with anxiety can be emotionally draining. Consider therapy for yourself, set healthy boundaries, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Family Support at Trailhead

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering mental health education, communication strategies, and building a supportive home environment.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Resist Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with anxiety to resist treatment — anxiety itself can make seeking help feel overwhelming. This doesn’t mean improvement is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.

Help them understand that anxiety disorders affect nearly 1 in 5 adults and seeking treatment is a sign of strength, not weakness. Sharing that anxiety is the most common — and most treatable — mental health condition can reduce the stigma they may feel.
Suggest a single phone call or telehealth session as a first step rather than committing to a full program. Trailhead offers virtual options that can ease the transition for people whose anxiety makes in-person visits daunting at first.
Use compassionate, non-judgmental language. “I’ve noticed you seem to be struggling, and I care about you” is more effective than pressure. Pushing too hard can increase anxiety and resistance. Let them know help is available when they’re ready.
Offer to make the phone call for them, drive them to their first appointment, or sit with them during a telehealth session. Removing logistical barriers can make the step feel less overwhelming for someone already battling anxiety.
If anxiety is accompanied by suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or complete inability to function, call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our admissions team can also guide you through next steps and help create a plan.
