Recognize the Signs

Signs & Symptoms of Trauma

Trauma responses are the brain’s way of protecting you from overwhelming experiences. Recognizing how trauma shows up in your life is the first step toward healing.

Re-Experiencing One of the hallmark signs of unresolved trauma is intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares related to the traumatic event. You may feel as if you’re reliving the experience, or experience intense emotional or physical reactions when reminded of what happened — even by seemingly small triggers.

Avoidance To cope, many trauma survivors develop avoidance patterns. Avoiding people, places, conversations, or activities that remind you of the trauma is common. You may feel emotionally numb, detached from loved ones, or unable to experience positive emotions. Memory gaps related to the traumatic event may also occur.

Hyperarousal Trauma often leaves the nervous system stuck in “fight or flight.” Being easily startled, constantly on edge, or struggling with anger and irritability are signs of hyperarousal. Sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and a persistent sense that the world is unsafe can make everyday life feel exhausting.

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these signs, help is available. Trauma processing is always client-led and never forced — you set the pace.

For Family Members

How to Help a Loved One Dealing with Trauma

Supporting someone through trauma recovery requires patience and understanding. These evidence-based steps can help you take care of both yourself and your loved one.

Educate Yourself About Trauma

Trauma fundamentally changes the brain’s stress response system — it’s not about being “weak” or “stuck in the past.” Understanding the neuroscience helps you respond with compassion rather than frustration.

Set Clear, Loving Boundaries

Communicate limits with compassion: “I love you, and I want to support your healing.” Respect their boundaries around discussing their trauma while gently encouraging professional help.

Be Patient with the Process

Trauma recovery is not linear. There will be good days and hard days. Avoid pressuring them to “get over it” or “move on.” Healing happens at its own pace — trust the process and trust your loved one.

Consider Family Therapy

Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering trauma’s impact on families, healthy communication, and building a supportive home. Open to family members 18+.

Take Care of Your Own Mental Health

Your wellbeing matters. Consider therapy for yourself, join a support group like NAMI, and maintain your own routines and social connections. Secondary trauma is real.

Have the Conversation in a Safe Moment

Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you seem to be struggling, and I care about you” rather than “You need to deal with what happened.” Never force someone to talk about their trauma.

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for trauma survivors to resist treatment out of fear, avoidance, or distrust. Here’s how to respond effectively.

Do This

  • Express concern with empathy and “I” statements
  • Set clear boundaries and follow through consistently
  • Research treatment options so you’re prepared when they’re ready
  • Consider a professional intervention with a certified specialist
  • Take care of your own mental health and wellbeing
  • Attend family support groups like NAMI
  • Call our admissions team for guidance — even if they’re not ready

Don’t Do This

  • Issue ultimatums you won’t follow through on
  • Force them to talk about what happened before they’re ready
  • Confront them when they’re triggered, dissociated, or overwhelmed
  • Use guilt, shame, or blame as motivation
  • Ignore warning signs hoping the problem will resolve itself
  • Sacrifice your own health and stability for their recovery
  • Give up — people enter recovery at all stages of readiness

If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts or risk of harm — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
