Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Recognizing the symptoms is the first step toward getting help.
Re-Experiencing One of the hallmark symptoms of PTSD is reliving the trauma. This can include vivid flashbacks that feel like the event is happening again, recurring nightmares about the trauma, or intense emotional or physical reactions to reminders of the event. You might experience sudden, intrusive memories that disrupt your daily life without warning.
Avoidance & Numbing To cope with the distress, many people with PTSD begin avoiding anything connected to the trauma. Avoiding places, people, activities, or conversations that trigger memories is common. Emotional numbing sets in. You may feel detached from loved ones, unable to experience positive emotions, or lose interest in activities you once enjoyed. This withdrawal can damage relationships and daily functioning.
Hyperarousal PTSD keeps the nervous system in a constant state of high alert. Hypervigilance — always scanning for danger, even in safe environments. Sleep becomes difficult due to insomnia or nightmares. Irritability, angry outbursts, difficulty concentrating, and an exaggerated startle response become part of daily life. This chronic state of arousal is exhausting and can lead to physical health problems.
If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms, effective treatment is available. Healing from trauma begins with reaching out for support.

Supporting someone through PTSD is one of the hardest things a family can do. These evidence-based steps can help you take care of both yourself and your loved one.
PTSD is a medical condition that changes how the brain processes fear and memory — not a sign of weakness. Understanding trauma responses helps you respond with patience rather than frustration.
Communicate limits with compassion: “I love you, and I understand this is difficult. I also need to take care of my own wellbeing.” Follow through consistently.
PTSD recovery is not linear. There will be good days and setbacks. Avoid pressuring your loved one to "just get over it" or rushing their healing timeline. Consistent, patient support makes a difference.
Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering trauma responses, secondary traumatic stress, and building a supportive home environment. Open to family members 18+.
Your wellbeing matters. Consider therapy for yourself, connect with support resources for families of trauma survivors, and maintain your own routines and social connections.
Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you seem to be struggling, and I want to help.” Choose a calm moment, acknowledge their pain, and offer to help them explore treatment options together.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, for current and past clients.
