Mild In its early stages, alcohol use disorder may look like drinking more or longer than intended, making unsuccessful attempts to cut down, or spending significant time obtaining, using, or recovering from alcohol. You might find yourself craving alcohol between episodes, or noticing that what used to be social drinking is becoming something more.
Moderate As the disorder progresses, the signs become harder to ignore. Failing to fulfill responsibilities at work, school, or home is common. Relationships suffer. You may find yourself giving up important social or recreational activities to drink, or continuing to drink despite knowing it’s causing problems. Drinking in physically dangerous situations becomes more frequent.
Severe At this stage, the body and brain are deeply affected. Tolerance builds — needing more alcohol to feel the same effects. Withdrawal symptoms appear when you stop: shaking, sweating, anxiety, and nausea. Drinking continues despite serious physical and psychological harm, and the inability to stop feels overwhelming.
