Opioid use disorder can develop from prescription painkillers, heroin, or synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Recognizing the signs early is the first step toward getting help.
Mild In its early stages, opioid use disorder may look like taking more medication than prescribed or using it longer than intended, making unsuccessful attempts to cut down, or spending significant time obtaining, using, or recovering from opioids. You might find yourself craving opioids between doses, or noticing that what started as pain management is becoming something more.
Moderate As the disorder progresses, the signs become harder to ignore. Pinpoint pupils, excessive drowsiness, and nodding off are common physical signs. Track marks or skin infections may appear. You may find yourself doctor shopping, borrowing medication, or turning to illicit sources to maintain supply. Failing to fulfill responsibilities at work, school, or home becomes routine.
Severe At this stage, the body and brain are deeply dependent. Tolerance builds rapidly — needing higher doses to feel the same effects. Withdrawal symptoms hit hard when you stop: muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, cold flashes, goosebumps, and intense cravings. Use continues despite serious physical harm, overdose risk, and devastating personal consequences, and the inability to stop feels overwhelming.
If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these signs at any severity level, help is available. Recovery begins with a single step.
Most clients begin treatment within 24–48 hours. Call now for a free, confidential consultation.

Supporting someone through addiction is one of the hardest things a family can do. These evidence-based steps can help you take care of both yourself and your loved one.
Alcohol addiction is a medical condition that changes brain chemistry — not a moral failing. Understanding the disease model helps you respond with compassion rather than frustration.
Communicate limits with compassion: “I love you, and I won’t participate in behaviors that support your addiction.” Follow through consistently.
Covering for their behavior, making excuses, or shielding them from consequences delays the moment they recognize they need help. Let natural consequences unfold.
Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, family systems, and substance use education. Open to family members 18+.
Your wellbeing matters. Consider therapy for yourself, join a support group like Al-Anon, and maintain your own routines and social connections.
Use “I” statements: “I’m worried about you” rather than “You have a problem.” Choose a calm moment and offer specific help rather than ultimatums.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
