What Sets Our PHP Apart

Explore Your Treatment Experience

CBT & DBT Foundation

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps you identify and reshape negative thought patterns, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy builds emotional regulation skills and healthy coping strategies you'll use for life.

ACT & Mindfulness

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy guides you toward psychological flexibility — learning to accept difficult feelings while committing to values-driven action and meaningful change.

Trauma Processing

Using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), our clinical team helps you safely process trauma when appropriate — always with your full consent and at a pace that feels manageable.

Individual Therapy

Weekly one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist — every client, regardless of program level. Your therapist coordinates with group facilitators so everything works together.

Recovery Pathways

Choose the recovery approach that resonates with you — 12-Step principles, SMART Recovery's science-based methods, or Dharma Recovery's mindful approach. No rigid one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Medication Management

Meet with our on-site Nurse Practitioner within 24 hours of admission. Medication-Assisted Treatment options include Suboxone, Vivitrol, and Naltrexone — your choice on approach.

Morning: Grounding & Group Work

Your day begins at 9:00am with your peers in a supportive group setting. Morning sessions focus on evidence-based skill building — practicing DBT techniques, working through CBT exercises, or exploring ACT principles. These aren't lectures; they're collaborative spaces where you learn by doing, sharing, and growing alongside others who understand your experience.

Midday: Individual Focus & Fellowship

Around midday, programming shifts to individual therapy sessions and psychoeducation groups. Lunch is provided daily — and it's more than just a meal. It's fellowship time, an opportunity to build genuine connections with your peers in a relaxed, family-style setting. These relationships often become a foundation for long-term recovery support.

Afternoon: Skills & Integration

Afternoons bring psychoeducation groups and case management support. Your case manager helps with practical life skills — resume building, job search strategies, court paperwork, and connecting you with resources. Programming wraps up around 3:30pm, leaving your evenings free for sober living, family time, or evening activities.

Beyond the Schedule

Treatment extends beyond the walls of our facility. Throughout your time in PHP, you'll have opportunities to participate in sober activities — hiking local trails, equine therapy at Blue Sky Farm, bowling outings, and community recovery events. These experiences help you rediscover joy and build a life worth sustaining in recovery.

1

Life Skills Development

Your case manager provides hands-on support with practical needs — resume writing, job search strategies, financial planning, and navigating court or legal requirements.

2

Family Involvement

Recovery affects the whole family. Individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom support groups (open to any family member 18+) address codependency, family systems, and education.

3

Step-Down Planning

As you progress, your team coordinates a smooth transition — whether that's stepping down to IOP, connecting with outpatient care, or establishing an aftercare plan with external providers.

4

Alumni Community

Graduation doesn't mean goodbye. Our alumni program keeps you connected through community events, support groups, and continued access to resources — a lasting network for your recovery journey.

5

Sober Living Coordination

Need housing support? We help coordinate sober living arrangements so you have a stable, recovery-focused environment as you transition back to independent living.

6

Ongoing Support Access

Continue individual therapy at the outpatient level, attend alumni events, and lean on the peer connections you built during PHP — your recovery network grows with you.

Your Recovery Journey

Treatment Phases

Phase 1: Assessment Phase 2: Skill Building Phase 3: Integration Phase 4: Transition

Assessment & Stabilization

Your journey begins with a comprehensive clinical assessment and evaluation by our Nurse Practitioner within 24 hours. Together, we create an individualized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs, goals, and circumstances — establishing the foundation for everything that follows.

Skill Building & Curriculum

The heart of your PHP experience. You'll engage in evidence-based group therapy (CBT, DBT, ACT), weekly individual sessions, and collaborative goal-setting with your clinical team. This phase is about building the toolkit of skills you'll carry into every area of your life.

Skill Application & Integration

Now you put your skills into practice. Sober activities like equine therapy, hiking, and community events help you apply what you've learned in real-world settings. Family involvement deepens as you rebuild relationships and develop your support network outside treatment.

Transition Planning & Step-Down

As you approach the end of PHP, your team coordinates your next steps — whether stepping down to IOP, connecting with outpatient providers, arranging sober living, or establishing aftercare plans. You'll be introduced to our alumni community so graduation feels like a beginning, not an ending.

Common Questions

Answers About PHP

How long does the PHP program last?
The average PHP stay is 20 to 30 days, though your actual length of stay depends on your individual progress, clinical needs, and treatment goals. Your care team will work with you to determine the right timing for stepping down to the next level.
Can I work while attending PHP?
PHP runs from 9am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday — so it's typically not compatible with a standard work schedule. However, if you need to maintain employment, our Evening Professional Track (IOP level, 6-9pm Mon-Thu) offers the same quality care with scheduling flexibility for working adults.
How much does PHP cost?
Cost depends on your insurance plan and coverage. We accept Anthem BCBS, Point 32 (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. For those without coverage, we offer affordable self-pay options. Call us at (857) 312-1697 for a free insurance verification.
Will insurance cover my PHP treatment?
Most of our clients have their PHP treatment covered by insurance. We're in-network with major providers including Anthem BCBS, Point 32, Tricare, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Our admissions team handles the verification process so you can focus on your recovery.
Can I do PHP virtually?
Yes — we offer telehealth and hybrid options for all program levels. You can attend sessions virtually, combine in-person and remote days, or participate fully online. This flexibility is especially helpful during transitions or for clients in surrounding areas.
How does PHP differ from IOP?
PHP is our most intensive level — running 9am to 3:30pm daily with lunch provided. IOP is a step down at 3.5 hours per session (morning, afternoon, or evening options). Both include group therapy, individual therapy, and medication management, but PHP offers more hours, more structure, and daily meals.
Can family members participate in treatment?
Absolutely. We offer individual family therapy sessions coordinated with your primary therapist, plus monthly family support groups via Zoom. These groups — open to any family member 18+ from both current and past clients — cover codependency, family systems, and substance use education.
What happens after PHP?
Most clients step down to our IOP program for continued support. Depending on your needs, we may also coordinate with outpatient providers, arrange sober living, or connect you with community resources. Our alumni program keeps you engaged through events, support groups, and ongoing access to the Trailhead community.
Who is PHP appropriate for?
PHP is ideal for adults (18+) coming from detox, those who are actively using and need intensive structure, or anyone who would benefit from full-day treatment while maintaining some independence. You don't need a substance use diagnosis — we also treat standalone mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.
What makes Trailhead's PHP different?
Flexible scheduling that adapts to your life, a family-style atmosphere where you're known by name, staff who combine lived recovery experience with professional credentials, 12:1 counselor caseloads (half the industry average), and an integrated admission process that gets you into programming within 24-48 hours — not weeks.
