What Sets Our IOP Apart

Explore Your Treatment Experience

CBT & DBT Foundation

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps you identify and reshape negative thought patterns, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy builds emotional regulation skills and healthy coping strategies you'll use for life.

ACT & Mindfulness

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy guides you toward psychological flexibility — learning to accept difficult feelings while committing to values-driven action and meaningful change.

Trauma Processing

Using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), our clinical team helps you safely process trauma when appropriate — always with your full consent and at a pace that feels manageable.

Individual Therapy

Weekly one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist — every client, regardless of program level. Your therapist coordinates with group facilitators so everything works together.

Recovery Pathways

Choose the recovery approach that resonates with you — 12-Step principles, SMART Recovery's science-based methods, or Dharma Recovery's mindful approach. No rigid one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Medication Management

Meet with our on-site Nurse Practitioner within 72 hours of enrollment. Medication-Assisted Treatment options include Suboxone, Vivitrol, and Naltrexone — your choice on approach.

Morning Track: 9:00am – 12:30pm

The morning track begins with a check-in and grounding exercise, followed by an evidence-based group therapy session — practicing DBT techniques, working through CBT exercises, or exploring ACT principles. A skills workshop rounds out the morning, with individual therapy sessions scheduled throughout the week. Snacks are provided during breaks.

Afternoon Track: 12:30pm – 3:30pm

The afternoon track mirrors the morning curriculum but runs on a later schedule — ideal for those who have morning commitments or prefer an afternoon rhythm. Group therapy, psychoeducation, and individual sessions fill the 3.5-hour block with the same evidence-based programming and clinical attention.

Evening Professional Track: 6:00pm – 9:00pm (Mon–Thu)

Designed specifically for working adults and students, the evening track delivers condensed IOP programming four nights per week. Group therapy, skills workshops, and psychoeducation are structured into the 6-9pm window so you can maintain your job, school, or family obligations during the day while prioritizing recovery in the evening.

Beyond the Schedule

Treatment extends beyond the walls of our facility. Throughout your time in IOP, you'll have opportunities to participate in sober activities — hiking local trails, equine therapy at Blue Sky Farm, bowling outings, and community recovery events. These experiences help you apply skills to real-world settings and build a life worth sustaining in recovery.

1

Work & Life Balance

IOP is designed to fit around your real life. With three schedule tracks, you can maintain employment, school, or family responsibilities while still receiving intensive, structured treatment.

4

Alumni Community

Graduation doesn't mean goodbye. Our alumni program keeps you connected through community events, support groups, and continued access to resources — a lasting network for your recovery journey.

5

Sober Living Coordination

Need housing support? We help coordinate sober living arrangements so you have a stable, recovery-focused environment as you transition back to independent living.

6

Your Recovery Journey

Treatment Phases

Phase 1: Enrollment Phase 2: Stabilization Phase 3: Growth Phase 4: Aftercare

Assessment & Enrollment

Your journey begins with insurance verification and a comprehensive clinical assessment. Together, we determine the right schedule track (morning, afternoon, or evening) and create an individualized treatment plan. Most clients start programming within 24 to 48 hours of their initial call.

Stabilization & Skill Building

The core of your IOP experience. You'll engage in evidence-based group therapy (CBT, DBT, ACT), weekly individual sessions, and psychoeducation groups with your clinical team. NP access within 72 hours ensures medication needs are addressed early. This phase builds the foundation of coping skills and emotional regulation.

Growth & Integration

Now you apply your skills to daily life. With IOP's flexible schedule, you're already balancing treatment with work, school, or family — and this phase focuses on strengthening that balance. Sober activities, family involvement, and real-world skill application deepen your recovery toolkit.

Transition & Aftercare

As you approach the end of IOP, your team coordinates your next steps — whether stepping down to standard outpatient care, connecting with community providers, or establishing a long-term aftercare plan. You'll be welcomed into our alumni program so graduation feels like a beginning, not an ending.

Common Questions

Answers About IOP

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured, evidence-based treatment — including group therapy, individual therapy, and psychoeducation — in 3.5-hour daily sessions. It's designed for people who need more support than standard outpatient therapy but don't require the full-day structure of PHP. At Trailhead, IOP runs 60 to 90 days with three schedule tracks to fit your life.
What's the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP (Partial Hospitalization) runs 9am to 3:30pm daily with lunch provided — it's our most intensive outpatient level. IOP is a step down at 3.5 hours per session with morning, afternoon, or evening options. Both include group therapy, individual therapy, and medication management, but IOP offers more schedule flexibility so you can work, attend school, or manage family responsibilities alongside treatment.
How long does IOP last?
The average IOP duration is 60 to 90 days, though your actual length of stay depends on your individual progress, clinical needs, and treatment goals. Your care team will work with you to determine the right timing for stepping down to standard outpatient care or completing the program.
What does a typical IOP day look like?
A typical IOP session lasts 3.5 hours and includes a morning check-in, group therapy, a skills workshop, and time for individual sessions (scheduled weekly). Snacks are provided during breaks. The morning track runs 9am-12:30pm, afternoon track 12:30-3:30pm, and the evening professional track runs 6-9pm Monday through Thursday in a condensed format.
Can I work while attending IOP?
Absolutely — IOP is specifically designed to fit around work, school, and family commitments. Our three schedule tracks (morning, afternoon, and evening) give you the flexibility to choose a time that works with your existing responsibilities. The Evening Professional Track (6-9pm Mon-Thu) is especially popular with working adults.
What is the Professional Evening Track?
The Professional Evening Track runs Monday through Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It delivers the same evidence-based IOP curriculum — group therapy, skills workshops, and psychoeducation — in a condensed evening format designed for working adults, students, or anyone who needs daytime hours free. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled at mutually convenient times.
How many days per week is IOP?
The morning and afternoon IOP tracks run Monday through Friday. The evening professional track runs Monday through Thursday. Your specific schedule may vary as you progress through the program — your clinical team will adjust frequency based on your needs and recovery goals.
What therapies are used in IOP?
Our IOP uses evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). You'll also have access to holistic approaches like yoga, meditation, and breathwork. Recovery pathway options include 12-Step, SMART Recovery, and Dharma Recovery — matched to your preference.
Does insurance cover IOP treatment?
Most of our clients have their IOP treatment covered by insurance. We're in-network with major providers including Anthem BCBS, Point 32 (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Our admissions team handles the verification process so you can focus on your recovery. Call (857) 312-1697 for a free insurance check.
How do I transition from PHP to IOP?
If you're already in our PHP program, your clinical team will coordinate a seamless step-down to IOP when you're ready. You'll stay at the same facility with the same clinical team — the only change is the schedule and intensity. If you're coming from an outside program, we'll complete a clinical assessment and can typically start you within 24-48 hours.
