Supporting someone healing from trauma requires patience, understanding, and respect for their process. These approaches can help.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for trauma survivors to resist treatment. Avoidance is a core trauma symptom. These approaches can help.
Avoidance is a hallmark trauma symptom, not stubbornness. Pushing someone into trauma treatment before they’re ready can be retraumatizing. Express your concern, share that help exists, and let them know you’ll support them whenever they’re ready — even if that’s not today.
Share information without pressure. “I read that CPT helps over half of people with PTSD recover fully. Would you want to look into it sometime?” Plant the seed and let it grow on their timeline. Repeated gentle mentions over time often work when pressure does not.
Trauma carries shame. Normalize treatment by sharing that millions of people work with therapists to heal from trauma. Emphasize that trauma-informed care at Trailhead is client-led — no one will force them to share anything before they’re ready.
Reassure them that trauma therapy starts with stabilization and safety — not immediately reliving the traumatic event. At Trailhead, the first weeks focus entirely on building trust, learning grounding skills, and feeling safe. Trauma processing only begins when the client is ready.
If there is immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe dissociative episodes, psychotic symptoms, or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. Trauma responses can escalate to crisis levels and professional intervention may be needed.
Our admissions team can guide you even if your loved one isn’t ready.
