Supporting someone through addiction is challenging. These evidence-based approaches can help.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for people struggling with benzodiazepine dependence to resist treatment. These approaches can help.
A structured, guided intervention led by a certified specialist can break through denial and help your loved one see the real impact of their benzodiazepine use on themselves and those around them. Professional interventionists know how to frame the conversation with compassion rather than confrontation.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change. Ask open-ended questions: “What would your life look like free from benzodiazepine dependence?” Let them arrive at their own motivation.
Follow through on consequences you’ve communicated. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change. Be specific: “If you continue taking pills beyond your prescription, I will not cover for you’s.” Then follow through consistently — empty threats enable continued use.
People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Your loved one may not be ready for action yet — but that doesn’t mean they won’t be. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing them where you want them to be.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe withdrawal symptoms (seizures, hallucinations), or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause life-threatening seizures and should never be managed alone. Abrupt cessation is extremely dangerous.
Our admissions team can guide you even if your loved one isn’t ready.
