Recognize the Signs

Signs of Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-occurring disorders — when addiction and mental health conditions exist together — are more common than most people realize. Recognizing the overlap is the first step toward integrated treatment.

Substance Use Signs

Using substances more frequently or in larger amounts than intended
Increased tolerance or withdrawal symptoms when not using
Continued use despite negative consequences at work, home, or school
Using substances to self-medicate anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms

Mental Health Signs

Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
Chronic anxiety, panic attacks, or overwhelming fear that disrupts daily functioning
Flashbacks, nightmares, or hypervigilance related to past trauma
Mood swings, irritability, or emotional dysregulation that worsens with substance use

Overlapping Warning Signs

Mental health symptoms that worsen during or after substance use
Relapse triggered by untreated depression, anxiety, or PTSD episodes
Previous treatment that addressed only one condition without lasting results
Feeling unable to manage emotions without substances — a cycle of self-medication

Recognizing these overlapping patterns? Our clinical team specializes in integrated dual-diagnosis assessment.

For Family Members

How to Help a Loved One with Co-Occurring Disorders

Supporting someone with both addiction and mental health conditions is uniquely challenging. These evidence-based approaches can help.

📚

Educate Yourself

Co-occurring disorders involve two medical conditions feeding each other. Understanding how addiction and mental illness interact helps you respond with compassion and realistic expectations.

🛑

Stop Enabling

Stop covering for their behavior or shielding them from consequences of either condition. Enabling delays the moment they seek integrated help.

🤝

Set Boundaries

Communicate limits with love. “I care about you, and I need you to get help for both what you’re using and what you’re feeling.”

👥

Family Therapy

Individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups on codependency, family systems, and understanding the dual-diagnosis recovery process.

💚

Self-Care First

Your mental health matters. Consider therapy, join Al-Anon, and maintain your own routines and social connections.

💬

Start the Talk

Choose a sober moment. Use “I” statements: “I’m worried about you” not “You have a problem.”

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with co-occurring disorders to resist treatment. These approaches can help.

Consider a Professional Intervention

A structured, guided intervention led by a certified specialist can break through denial and help your loved one see the real impact of their substance use and untreated mental health on themselves and those around them. Professional interventionists know how to frame the conversation with compassion rather than confrontation.

Use Motivational Approaches

Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change. Ask open-ended questions: “What would your life look like if you felt better and were in control?” Let them arrive at their own motivation.

Set Clear Boundaries

Follow through on consequences you’ve communicated. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change. Be specific about behaviors — not diagnoses. Then follow through consistently — empty threats enable continued avoidance of treatment for both conditions.

Understand the Stages of Change

People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Your loved one may not be ready for action yet — but that doesn’t mean they won’t be. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing them where you want them to be.

Know When to Call for Help

If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe withdrawal symptoms, psychotic episodes, or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. Co-occurring disorders can escalate quickly when either condition is untreated.

Our admissions team can guide you even if your loved one isn’t ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment FAQ

Co-occurring disorders (also called dual diagnosis) means having both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Common combinations include addiction with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. The two conditions interact and worsen each other, which is why integrated treatment is essential.
When only one condition is treated, the untreated condition often triggers relapse of the other. For example, untreated depression can drive someone back to substance use, and active addiction worsens mental health symptoms. Integrated treatment addresses both simultaneously, breaking the cycle and dramatically improving outcomes.
Very common. Approximately 9.2 million adults in the U.S. have co-occurring disorders, and roughly half of all people with a substance use disorder also have a mental health condition. Despite the prevalence, only about 7% receive integrated treatment for both conditions.
Treatment length varies by individual need and the complexity of both conditions. PHP typically lasts 20–30 days, IOP runs 60–90 days, and ongoing outpatient support continues as needed. Co-occurring disorders often benefit from a longer continuum of care to stabilize both conditions.
Our on-site Nurse Practitioner manages both addiction medications (like Vivitrol and Naltrexone) and psychiatric medications (antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilizers) in one integrated plan. This coordinated approach prevents drug interactions and ensures both conditions are addressed pharmacologically.
We use CBT, DBT, ACT, trauma-focused therapy, 12-Step facilitation, SMART Recovery, and holistic approaches including yoga, meditation, breathwork, and equine therapy. Each modality is adapted to address both the addiction and the mental health condition simultaneously.
Yes — family involvement is encouraged and especially important for co-occurring disorders. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom family education groups covering codependency, family systems, mental health education, and how to support recovery from both conditions. Open to any family member 18+.
Most major insurance plans cover dual-diagnosis treatment. Federal parity laws require insurance to cover mental health and substance use at the same level as medical conditions. We’re in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health, Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Our admissions team can verify your benefits in minutes.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon–Thu) is designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP sessions and telehealth. You can switch between time slots daily based on your schedule.
We plan for aftercare from day one. Options include stepping down to IOP or OP with continued psychiatric medication management, enrolling in our alumni program, referrals to external therapists and psychiatrists, continued family support groups, and coordination with community mental health resources.
