Supporting someone with PTSD is challenging. These evidence-based approaches can help.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for people struggling with PTSD to resist treatment. Avoidance is a core symptom. These approaches can help.
A structured, guided conversation led by a mental health professional can help your loved one understand that avoidance is a symptom of PTSD, not a solution. Therapists trained in motivational approaches know how to frame the conversation with compassion rather than confrontation.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change. Ask open-ended questions: “What would your life look like without the nightmares and anxiety?” Let them arrive at their own motivation.
Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change. Be specific about what behaviors you can and cannot accept. Consistently enforcing healthy boundaries — while expressing love — helps create an environment where seeking treatment becomes the natural next step.
People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Your loved one may not be ready for action yet — but that doesn’t mean they won’t be. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing them where you want them to be.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe dissociative episodes, or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. PTSD can escalate to crisis, and professional intervention saves lives.
Our admissions team can guide you even if your loved one isn’t ready.
