For Family Members

How to Help a Loved One with Mental Health Challenges

Supporting someone through a mental health crisis is challenging. These evidence-based approaches can help.

📚

Educate Yourself

Mental illness is a medical condition, not a character flaw. Understanding the clinical reality helps you respond with compassion rather than frustration.

🛑

Listen Without Judgment

Create a safe space for them to share. Avoid minimizing their experience with phrases like “just cheer up” or “everyone feels that way sometimes.”

🤝

Encourage Professional Help

Gently suggest treatment. “I care about you, and I think talking to a professional could really help. You don’t have to do this alone.”

👥

Family Therapy

Individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups on family dynamics, mental health conditions, and supporting your loved one’s wellness.

💚

Self-Care First

Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, maintain your own routines, and stay connected to your support network.

💬

Start the Conversation

Choose a calm, private moment. Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you seem different lately and I’m concerned” not “You need to fix yourself.”

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.

When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for people struggling with mental health conditions to resist treatment. These approaches can help.

Consider a Professional Intervention

A structured, guided conversation led by a mental health professional can help your loved one see the real impact of their untreated condition on themselves and those around them. Professionals know how to frame the conversation with compassion rather than confrontation.

Use Motivational Approaches

Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Focus on their own reasons for wanting change. Ask open-ended questions: “What would your life look like if you felt better?” Let them arrive at their own motivation for seeking help.

Set Clear Boundaries

Boundaries protect your own wellbeing and can motivate change. Be clear about what you can and cannot accept. Compassionate boundaries are not punishment — they are self-preservation and can be the catalyst someone needs to seek help.

Understand the Stages of Change

People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Your loved one may not be ready for action yet — but that doesn’t mean they won’t be. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing them where you want them to be.

Know When to Call for Help

If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, self-harm, psychotic episodes, or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. Mental health crises are medical emergencies and should never be managed alone.

Our admissions team can guide you even if your loved one isn’t ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mental Health Treatment FAQ

We treat a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD and trauma, bipolar disorder, grief and loss, adjustment disorders, and more. You do not need a substance use diagnosis to access our programs.
Consider seeking treatment when symptoms persist for two or more weeks, interfere with daily functioning (work, relationships, self-care), or feel overwhelming. If outpatient therapy alone hasn’t been enough, a structured program like PHP or IOP provides the intensive support needed to make real progress.
No. While many of our clients have co-occurring conditions, you absolutely do not need a substance use or addiction diagnosis to access our mental health programs. We treat mental health conditions on their own with the same level of intensity and clinical expertise.
Treatment length varies by individual need and condition severity. PHP typically lasts 20–30 days, IOP runs 60–90 days, and ongoing outpatient support continues as needed. Most clients benefit from stepping down gradually from higher to lower intensity as symptoms improve.
When clinically appropriate, yes. Our on-site Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner can prescribe and manage antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, and other psychiatric medications. Medication is always combined with therapy for a comprehensive approach — never medication alone.
We use CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, trauma-focused therapy, and holistic approaches including yoga, meditation, breathwork, and equine therapy. Your treatment plan is individualized to your specific mental health needs and goals.
Yes — family involvement is encouraged. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom family education groups covering family dynamics, mental health education, and communication strategies. Open to any family member 18+.
Most major insurance plans cover mental health treatment. Federal parity laws require insurance to cover mental health at the same level as medical conditions. We’re in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health, Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Our admissions team can verify your benefits in minutes.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon–Thu) is designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP sessions and telehealth. You can switch between time slots daily based on your schedule.
We plan for aftercare from day one. Options include stepping down to IOP or OP, ongoing psychiatric medication management, enrolling in our alumni program, referrals to external therapists and psychiatrists, and continued family support groups.
