For Family Members

How to Support a Loved One with Trauma

Supporting someone healing from trauma requires patience, understanding, and respect for their process. These approaches can help.

📚

Learn About Trauma

Trauma changes the brain and nervous system. Understanding that their reactions are survival responses — not choices — helps you respond with compassion.

🛑

Don’t Push Them to Talk

Never pressure someone to share their trauma story. Forcing disclosure can be retraumatizing. Let them share when and if they choose to — on their timeline.

🤝

Be Predictable & Safe

Trauma survivors need predictability. Follow through on commitments, avoid sudden changes, and create a calm, stable environment.

👥

Family Therapy

Family sessions help everyone understand how trauma affects the whole family system and learn to communicate in ways that support healing rather than trigger responses.

💚

Self-Care First

Secondary trauma is real. Supporting a trauma survivor can be emotionally heavy. Take care of your own mental health — you deserve support too.

💬

Encourage, Don’t Force

Gently encourage treatment when the time is right. “I’ve noticed you’ve been struggling, and I want you to know help is available whenever you’re ready.”

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.

Call for Family Support
When a Loved One Won’t Seek Help

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s common for trauma survivors to resist treatment. Avoidance is a core trauma symptom. These approaches can help.

Respect Their Pace

Avoidance is a hallmark trauma symptom, not stubbornness. Pushing someone into trauma treatment before they’re ready can be retraumatizing. Express your concern, share that help exists, and let them know you’ll support them whenever they’re ready — even if that’s not today.

Plant Seeds Gently

Share information without pressure. “I read that CPT helps over half of people with PTSD recover fully. Would you want to look into it sometime?” Plant the seed and let it grow on their timeline. Repeated gentle mentions over time often work when pressure does not.

Normalize Getting Help

Trauma carries shame. Normalize treatment by sharing that millions of people work with therapists to heal from trauma. Emphasize that trauma-informed care at Trailhead is client-led — no one will force them to share anything before they’re ready.

Start With Safety, Not Processing

Reassure them that trauma therapy starts with stabilization and safety — not immediately reliving the traumatic event. At Trailhead, the first weeks focus entirely on building trust, learning grounding skills, and feeling safe. Trauma processing only begins when the client is ready.

Know When to Call for Help

If there is immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe dissociative episodes, psychotic symptoms, or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately. Trauma responses can escalate to crisis levels and professional intervention may be needed.

Our admissions team can guide you even if your loved one isn’t ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trauma-Informed Care FAQ

Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and integrates that understanding into every aspect of treatment. At Trailhead, this means every staff member, policy, and practice is designed to promote safety, trust, and empowerment — and to avoid re-traumatization.
We treat all forms of trauma including childhood abuse and neglect, sexual assault, domestic violence, combat trauma, accidents, witnessing violence, medical trauma, and complex/developmental trauma. Our clinicians are trained to work with both single-event and complex trauma histories.
Absolutely not. Trauma processing at Trailhead is always client-led and never forced. Treatment begins with stabilization, safety, and building trust. You decide when — and if — you’re ready to process specific traumatic memories. Your pace is respected at every stage.
Treatment length varies by trauma history and individual need. PHP typically lasts 20–30 days, IOP runs 60–90 days, and ongoing outpatient support continues as needed. Complex trauma may require longer treatment. The pace is always client-directed.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD that helps you examine and challenge unhelpful beliefs related to your trauma (“stuck points”). Through structured sessions, you learn to process the traumatic event in a way that reduces its emotional hold on you.
In addition to CPT, we use somatic experiencing, DBT skills for emotional regulation, mindfulness-based approaches, yoga, breathwork, and creative expression therapies. Your treatment plan is individualized based on your trauma history and what feels safe for you.
Yes — when the client consents, family involvement can be powerful. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom family education groups. Families learn about trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and how to create a healing-supportive environment. Open to any family member 18+.
Most major insurance plans cover mental health treatment including PTSD and trauma. We’re in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health, Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Our admissions team can verify your benefits in minutes.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon–Thu) is designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP sessions and telehealth. You can switch between time slots daily based on your schedule.
We plan for aftercare from day one. Options include stepping down to IOP or OP, enrolling in our alumni program, referrals to external therapists, continued family support groups, and sober living coordination.
