We offer a full range of FDA-approved medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Your Nurse Practitioner will work with you to determine the best option based on your history, preferences, and recovery goals.

Suboxone (Buprenorphine/Naloxone)

The most commonly prescribed MAT medication. Reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms while blocking the effects of opioids. Available in sublingual film or tablet form.

Vivitrol (Extended-Release Naltrexone)

A once-monthly injection that blocks opioid receptors. Ideal for clients who have completed detox and want a non-addictive, long-acting option with no daily dosing.

Oral Naltrexone

Daily oral medication that blocks opioid and alcohol effects. Effective for both opioid and alcohol use disorders, reducing cravings and preventing relapse.

Subutex (Buprenorphine)

A buprenorphine-only formulation used when the combination product is not appropriate. Often used during induction or for clients with specific medical considerations.

Methadone Coordination

While methadone is dispensed through certified OTPs, we coordinate care for clients on methadone maintenance — ensuring seamless integration with their therapy and counseling at Trailhead.

What's Included & Our Philosophy

MAT at Trailhead is never medication alone. Every client receives comprehensive therapeutic support alongside their medication, because lasting recovery requires both biological and behavioral change.

Individual Therapy

Weekly one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist. Address the underlying issues driving substance use while medication manages the physical symptoms.

Group Therapy & Psychoeducation

Evidence-based group sessions including CBT, DBT skills, relapse prevention, and MAT-specific psychoeducation on how medications work and what to expect.

Family Education

Help your family understand MAT, reduce stigma, and build a supportive home environment. Monthly family groups and individual family sessions available.

Client Choice: Taper vs. Maintenance

We respect your autonomy. Some clients prefer gradual tapering toward medication-free recovery; others benefit from long-term maintenance. Both are valid, evidence-based paths — and the choice is yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About MAT

About MAT

MAT combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. It's considered the gold standard for opioid use disorder treatment and is also effective for alcohol dependence. At Trailhead, MAT is always paired with therapy — never medication alone.

We offer five medication options: Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone injection), oral Naltrexone, Subutex (buprenorphine only), and methadone coordination. Your Nurse Practitioner will help you choose the best option based on your history and goals.

No. MAT medications are FDA-approved, clinically supervised, and taken at stable therapeutic doses. Unlike illicit drug use, MAT normalizes brain chemistry, blocks euphoric effects of opioids, reduces cravings, and allows you to function normally. Research consistently shows MAT reduces overdose deaths, decreases illicit drug use, and improves treatment retention.

Duration varies by individual. Some clients benefit from short-term medication (3-6 months) with a gradual taper, while others do best on long-term maintenance. There is no set timeline — your NP works with you to determine the right duration based on your recovery progress and preferences.

Tapering means gradually reducing your medication dose over time with the goal of eventually stopping. Maintenance means staying on a stable dose long-term. Both are valid, evidence-based approaches. At Trailhead, this is always a client-driven decision — we support whichever path you choose without judgment.

Specific Medications

Suboxone contains buprenorphine (a partial opioid agonist) and naloxone (an opioid blocker). It attaches to the same brain receptors as opioids but produces a much weaker effect — enough to reduce cravings and withdrawal without producing a high. The naloxone component discourages misuse.

Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection of extended-release naltrexone. Unlike Suboxone, it completely blocks opioid receptors rather than partially activating them. It's non-addictive, requires no daily dosing, and is a good option for clients who have completed detox and want to prevent relapse without taking a daily medication.

Getting Started & Insurance

Yes. Most major insurance plans cover MAT, including the medications and associated therapy. We're in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Call us for a free, confidential insurance verification.

Absolutely. MAT is available at all levels of care at Trailhead — PHP, IOP, and outpatient. Your medication management continues seamlessly as you step down through care levels, with your NP adjusting your plan as your needs evolve.

If you and your NP decide to taper, it's done gradually over weeks or months to minimize withdrawal symptoms. You'll have increased therapy support during the taper period. Your NP will coordinate with external providers to ensure continuity of care after you complete programming at Trailhead.
