Supporting someone with OCD is its own journey. Here’s where to start.
OCD is a neurological condition, not a personality quirk. Understanding the obsession-anxiety-compulsion-relief cycle helps you respond with empathy rather than frustration or minimization.
Family accommodation — reassuring, participating in rituals, or changing your behavior to reduce their anxiety — actually makes OCD worse over time. Learning to stop is one of the most impactful things you can do.
Encourage your loved one to face their fears rather than avoid them. This means tolerating their short-term distress during exposures, knowing it leads to long-term improvement.
Trailhead offers monthly family education groups via Zoom plus individual family sessions. Understanding your role in the OCD cycle is essential to lasting recovery.
Living with someone who has OCD is exhausting. Consider individual therapy, IOCDF support groups, or caregiver resources for families navigating a loved one’s OCD.
OCD recovery is gradual and non-linear. There will be setbacks. Celebrate small wins, maintain consistent support, and remember that ERP takes courage.
It’s common for someone with OCD to resist treatment — especially when avoidance feels safer. Here’s how to navigate that.
Our family support program is open to any family member 18+, past and present clients.
We provide OCD treatment for clients throughout Salem, NH, and Greater New Hampshire. Conveniently located just minutes off Route 93 with easy access from southern NH and northern MA.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) involves gradually facing feared situations (exposures) while resisting the urge to perform compulsions (response prevention). Research shows ERP is effective for 60–80% of OCD patients, making it the most evidence-based treatment available.
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are the first-line medication for OCD, often prescribed at higher doses than for depression. Our on-site NP manages these protocols with careful titration and monitoring alongside ERP therapy.
Initially, exposures do increase anxiety — that’s expected and intentional. However, through repeated practice, your brain learns that the feared outcome doesn’t happen and anxiety naturally decreases. This process is called habituation.
Yes. We treat all OCD subtypes including contamination, harm, sexual/religious intrusive thoughts, symmetry/ordering, checking, and “pure O” (primarily obsessional OCD). Our clinicians create individualized ERP hierarchies for each subtype.
