FDA-Approved Medications

Five Medication Options for Your Recovery

Trailhead offers five FDA-approved medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) reduces cravings and prevents withdrawal. Subutex (buprenorphine) provides an alternative for clients who cannot tolerate naloxone. Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone) is a once-monthly injection that blocks opioid receptors entirely.

Oral Naltrexone offers daily dosing flexibility for both opioid and alcohol dependence. Methadone is available through coordinated referral for clients who need full agonist therapy. Every medication decision is made collaboratively between you and our Nurse Practitioner — your biology, your history, your choice.

What's Included

Medication Plus Full Treatment

MAT at Trailhead is never medication alone. Every client receives weekly medication management appointments, individual therapy using CBT and motivational interviewing, and group sessions covering relapse prevention, psychoeducation, and coping skills. Medication education groups help you understand exactly how your medication works, what to expect, and how to manage your treatment long-term.

Case management support covers insurance coordination, pharmacy logistics, and prior authorizations. Family education sessions help loved ones understand MAT as a clinical tool — reducing stigma and building a home environment that supports your recovery.

Your Choice, Your Plan

Taper or Maintenance — You Decide

Trailhead believes in client autonomy. Some people use MAT as a bridge — stabilizing on medication and then tapering off over weeks or months. Others choose long-term maintenance because it supports their best quality of life. Both paths are clinically valid, and we support whichever one you choose.

Your Nurse Practitioner works with you to set dosing goals that align with your recovery timeline. If your goals change — and they often do — your plan adjusts with you. There is no pressure to taper, no judgment for staying on medication, and no one-size-fits-all protocol. This is your recovery.

IOP clients maintain their medication schedule with evening and weekend flexibility. Outpatient clients can continue MAT with periodic NP visits and therapy sessions.

As you step down through levels of care, your medication management continues uninterrupted. There is no gap in prescriptions, no lapse in monitoring, and no need to find an outside provider. Continuity of care is built into the system from day one through alumni support.

We offer five options: Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), Subutex (buprenorphine), Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone injection), oral Naltrexone, and coordinated Methadone referral. Your Nurse Practitioner helps you choose the best fit for your biology and goals.

No. MAT medications are FDA-approved, clinically monitored, and taken at stable therapeutic doses — they do not produce the euphoria or dangerous effects of illicit substances. Research consistently shows MAT reduces overdose deaths, improves treatment retention, and supports long-term recovery.

Most clients begin medication within 24 to 48 hours of their first call. Our on-site Nurse Practitioner can often start medication induction on the same day as your medical evaluation — no outside referrals or long waits.

That is entirely your choice. Some clients use MAT as a bridge and taper off over weeks or months. Others choose long-term maintenance because it supports their best quality of life. Both paths are clinically valid, and your NP adjusts your plan as your goals evolve.
