Recognize the Signs

Signs You May Benefit from Mental Health Treatment

Mental health conditions exist on a spectrum. You don’t need to be in crisis to deserve support — but recognizing where you are can help determine the right level of care.

Emotional Signs
Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that lasts weeks or months — not just a bad day, but a weight that won’t lift.
Anxiety that feels disproportionate to the situation — racing thoughts, constant worry, or a sense of dread that colors every waking hour.
Emotional numbness or detachment from things you used to care about — relationships, hobbies, goals, even basic pleasure.
Irritability, anger, or mood swings that feel out of your control and strain your relationships.
Behavioral Signs
Withdrawing from friends, family, and social situations — canceling plans, isolating, or just going through the motions.
Difficulty concentrating at work or school, missing deadlines, or making mistakes that aren’t like you.
Changes in sleep patterns — insomnia, oversleeping, or restless nights filled with intrusive thoughts.
Neglecting self-care, hygiene, nutrition, or exercise because you simply don’t have the energy or motivation.
Crisis Signs
Thoughts of self-harm or suicide, even if they feel passive or fleeting — these always deserve professional attention.
Panic attacks, dissociative episodes, or flashbacks that make it impossible to function normally.
Complete inability to manage daily responsibilities — unable to get out of bed, go to work, or care for yourself or your family.
Feeling like you’ve tried everything on your own and nothing has worked — that sense of being stuck is itself a sign that professional help is needed.

If any of these resonated, our clinical team can help determine the right level of care. No substance use diagnosis is required.

Mental Health in New Hampshire

New Hampshire ranks among the states with the highest prevalence of mental illness and the greatest unmet treatment needs. Approximately 22.4% of adults in the state report experiencing a mental health condition in the past year1, yet access to timely, quality care remains a significant challenge. The state faces a well-documented shortage of mental health providers, with many residents waiting weeks or months for an initial psychiatric evaluation2.

The consequences of untreated mental illness are devastating. New Hampshire’s suicide rate is approximately 35% higher than the national average3, and emergency departments across the state report growing volumes of mental health crisis presentations. Behind every statistic is a person who needed help sooner. At Trailhead, we believe that intensive outpatient mental health treatment — available within 24 to 48 hours, not weeks — changes these numbers one person at a time.

For Families

How to Help a Loved One with Mental Health Challenges

Dear Family Member,

If you are reading this, you are probably worried about someone you love. Maybe they’ve been withdrawing. Maybe the depression has gotten worse. Maybe the anxiety has taken over their life in ways you never expected. That worry is a sign of something good — it means you haven’t given up. And we want you to know: you shouldn’t.

Mental illness is a medical condition, not a character flaw. The person you knew before the symptoms took hold is still there. But they may need professional help to find their way back — and you may need guidance too.

Start by educating yourself. Learn about their specific condition — depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or whatever they’re facing. Understand that it’s not something they can simply “snap out of,” and that telling them to “just think positive” can actually make things worse. Validate their experience instead.

Offer specific help, not vague support. Instead of “Let me know if you need anything,” try “I found a mental health program in Salem that could help — can we look at it together?” or “I’ll drive you to your first appointment.” Concrete offers reduce the overwhelming feeling of taking that first step.

Take care of yourself, too. Consider therapy, NAMI family support groups, or our monthly family education groups on Zoom. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and ongoing family support — for all family members ages 18 and up, past and present clients.

With hope,
The Clinical Team at Trailhead Treatment Center
When They Won’t Go

What If They Refuse Treatment?

Resistance to mental health treatment is common. Stigma, fear, and the illness itself can all create barriers. It doesn’t mean recovery is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed. Below, our clinical team answers the questions families ask most.

They say they’re “fine” and don’t need help. What do we do?
Denial is a hallmark of many mental health conditions. Depression can convince someone that they deserve to feel bad. Anxiety can make the idea of seeking help feel more threatening than the condition itself. Choose a calm moment to express your concern using “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you haven’t been yourself, and I’m worried.” Don’t argue about whether they’re “fine” — focus on specific behaviors you’ve observed.
They’ve had bad experiences with therapy before. How do we convince them to try again?
Not all treatment is created equal. A bad experience with a previous therapist or program doesn’t mean treatment itself doesn’t work — it means they haven’t found the right fit yet. Trailhead offers structured programming with daily groups, weekly individual therapy, on-site psychiatric care, and holistic activities. It’s a fundamentally different experience from seeing a therapist once a week. Validate their past experience and frame this as something new.
They’re worried about what people will think. How do we address the stigma?
Mental health stigma is real, and it kills people. Normalize the conversation by sharing that one in five adults experiences a mental health condition in any given year. Remind them that seeking treatment is a sign of strength, not weakness. Point out that they wouldn’t hesitate to see a doctor for a broken bone — a mental health condition deserves the same level of professional care.
How do we know when it’s “bad enough” for intensive treatment?
There is no minimum threshold of suffering required to deserve help. If mental health symptoms are impacting their daily functioning, relationships, work, or quality of life, treatment is appropriate. You do not need to wait for a crisis. The best time to seek treatment is right now — before things get worse.
What should we do in the meantime?
Take care of yourself. Attend NAMI family groups or seek your own therapy. Educate yourself about their condition. Stay present and connected without trying to “fix” them. And when they’re ready — or when there’s a window of willingness, even a small one — have the information ready. We can admit clients within 24 to 48 hours of a call. No substance use diagnosis is required.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Mental Health Treatment

Do I need a substance use diagnosis to attend Trailhead?

No. Our mental health programs are open to anyone struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, trauma, or other mental health conditions — regardless of whether substance use is involved. You do not need a substance use diagnosis to receive intensive outpatient mental health treatment at Trailhead.

• • •

What does a typical day in PHP look like?

PHP clients attend Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. A typical day includes group therapy (CBT, DBT, or ACT), an individual session with your assigned clinician, psychoeducation, holistic activities like breathwork or yoga, and lunch. You go home each evening — this is outpatient treatment, not residential.

• • •

What is the difference between PHP and IOP?

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is full-day treatment, typically 5–6 hours per day, 5 days a week. IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is a step-down offering 3–4 hours per day with more scheduling flexibility — morning, afternoon, or evening tracks. Both include group and individual therapy. Most clients start in PHP and transition to IOP as they progress.

• • •

Do you prescribe psychiatric medication?

Yes. Our on-site Nurse Practitioner provides full psychiatric medication management — including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-anxiety medications, and other psychiatric medications. Evaluations can be completed within 24 hours of admission. All medication decisions are collaborative and client-directed.

• • •

Will my insurance cover mental health treatment?

Most major insurance plans cover mental health treatment. We are in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health (Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense (NH Medicaid). Use the verification form above or call our admissions team — we can typically verify benefits within minutes.

• • •

How quickly can I start treatment?

Most clients begin treatment within 24 to 48 hours of their initial call. We have multiple admission windows each week. Unlike many private practices with months-long waitlists, Trailhead offers rapid access to intensive mental health care.

• • •

What mental health conditions do you treat?

We treat a wide range of mental health conditions including major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, PTSD, complex trauma, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, and more. Every client receives a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to identify all conditions present, and the treatment plan is individualized to your specific needs.
