For Families

How to Help a Loved One

Supporting someone with PTSD is challenging. These tips can make the conversation easier and more effective.

Educate Yourself About Trauma

Learn about PTSD as a medical condition resulting from trauma, not weakness. Understanding how the brain processes trauma helps you respond with compassion instead of frustration.

Don’t Push Them to Talk

Pressuring someone to share trauma details before they’re ready can be retraumatizing. Let them know you’re available and willing to listen when they choose to share.

Be Patient with Triggers

PTSD triggers can seem irrational from the outside. A loud noise, a certain smell, or a crowded space can cause intense reactions. Stay calm and help them ground themselves.

Join Family Therapy

Trailhead offers monthly Zoom family education groups. Open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. Curriculum covers trauma responses, communication, and support strategies.

Take Care of Yourself

Secondary trauma is real. Caring for someone with PTSD can take an emotional toll. Seek your own therapy, join a support group, and prioritize your mental health too.

Understand the Connection to Substance Use

Many people with PTSD self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. If your loved one is struggling with both, integrated treatment that addresses trauma and substance use together is most effective.

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+. Call (857) 312-1697

When They’re Not Ready

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s painful when someone you love won’t accept help. Here are steps that can make a difference.

1

Understand Their Resistance

Avoidance is a core PTSD symptom. Your loved one may be avoiding treatment because engaging with trauma feels unsafe. Their resistance is often the disorder itself at work.

2

Use Gentle, Non-Pressuring Language

Express concern without commands. “I can see you’re carrying a lot, and I want you to know help is available when you’re ready” instead of “You need to get over this.”

3

Create a Sense of Safety

For someone with PTSD, feeling safe is essential before anything else can happen. Let them know treatment is at their pace and they control the process.

4

Suggest Starting Small

If a full program feels overwhelming, suggest a single phone call or a telehealth session from home. Meeting them where they are builds trust incrementally.

5

Know When to Call for Help

If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, self-harm, violent outbursts, or substance overdose — call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or 911 immediately.

Our admissions team can guide you through next steps — even if your loved one isn’t ready yet.

Common Questions

PTSD Treatment FAQ

What are the signs of PTSD?

Key signs include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle response, avoidance of trauma reminders, emotional numbing, sleep disruption, and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms typically persist for more than a month after the traumatic event.

How long does PTSD treatment take?

PHP typically lasts 20–30 days, followed by IOP for 60–90 days. Trauma processing takes time and varies by individual. Many clients continue with outpatient therapy for ongoing support and integration.

Is your mental health program separate from substance use treatment?

Yes. Our mental health track is specifically designed for individuals dealing with PTSD and other trauma-related conditions, separate from our substance use programming. However, we also provide integrated care for those with co-occurring PTSD and substance use.

What medications are used for PTSD?

Our NP commonly prescribes SSRIs such as sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil), which are FDA-approved for PTSD. Prazosin may be prescribed for trauma-related nightmares. All medication is paired with therapy.

Can I work while in PTSD treatment?

Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon–Thu) is specifically designed for working adults who need treatment without disrupting their careers.

Will insurance cover PTSD treatment?

Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Anthem BCBS, Point 32, Tricare (particularly relevant for veterans), and WellSense NH Medicaid. Mental health treatment has insurance parity protections.

What therapy approaches do you use for PTSD?

We use CPT (cognitive processing therapy), CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), trauma-focused therapy, grounding techniques, breathwork, and mindfulness — all individualized to each client’s needs and pace.

Is PTSD connected to substance use?

Yes. Nearly half of people with PTSD also struggle with substance use. Many turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with trauma symptoms. We provide integrated treatment that addresses both conditions simultaneously.

Can family members be involved in treatment?

Yes. We offer family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom family education groups. These are open to any family member 18+, covering trauma responses, communication strategies, and secondary trauma awareness.

What makes Trailhead different for PTSD treatment?

Dedicated mental health track, trauma-specialized clinicians, safe and calming facility, CPT and trauma-focused CBT, NP-managed medication within 24 hours, integrated co-occurring treatment, and same-day admissions.
