For Families

How to Help a Loved One

Supporting someone through mental health challenges takes patience and understanding. These tips can help.

Listen Without Fixing

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply listen. Don’t try to solve their problems — validate their feelings and let them know they’re not alone.

Educate Yourself

Learn about their specific condition. Understanding that depression isn’t laziness, anxiety isn’t weakness, and mental illness isn’t a choice helps you respond with empathy.

Encourage Professional Help

Gently encourage treatment without pressure. Offer to help with logistics — making the call, driving to appointments, verifying insurance together.

Join Family Therapy

Trailhead offers monthly Zoom family education groups. Open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. Curriculum covers mental health literacy, communication, and support strategies.

Take Care of Yourself

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Seek your own therapy or support group, set healthy boundaries, and prioritize your own mental health too.

Be Patient with the Process

Mental health recovery isn’t linear. Medication adjustments take time. Therapy is a process. Your consistent, non-judgmental presence matters more than having the right words.

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+. Call (857) 312-1697

When They’re Not Ready

What If They Refuse Treatment?

It’s painful when someone you love won’t accept help. Here are steps that can make a difference.

1

Normalize Getting Help

Mental health treatment is as normal as seeing a doctor for a broken bone. Reduce stigma by talking openly about therapy and mental health care in your own life.

2

Use Compassionate Language

Express concern without judgment. “I’ve noticed you seem to be struggling...” instead of “What’s wrong with you?” Focus on behaviors, not character.

3

Suggest Small Steps

A full treatment program may feel overwhelming. Suggest they just make one phone call, or try one session. Reducing the barrier can open the door to bigger changes.

4

Set Boundaries with Love

Boundaries aren’t ultimatums — they’re statements of what you will and won’t accept. Enforce them consistently while showing you care.

5

Know When to Call for Help

If there’s immediate danger — suicidal ideation, severe crisis, threats of self-harm — call 911 or 988. For guidance on next steps, call us anytime.

Our admissions team can guide you through next steps — even if your loved one isn’t ready yet.

What mental health conditions do you treat?

We treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, BPD, OCD, grief, self-harm, adjustment disorders, and more. Call us to discuss your specific situation.

What therapy approaches do you use?

We offer CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness-based therapy, motivational interviewing, and psychoeducation — individualized to each client’s diagnosis and goals.

Will insurance cover mental health treatment?

Yes. Mental health treatment is covered under parity laws. Most major plans including Anthem BCBS, Point 32, Tricare, and WellSense NH Medicaid are accepted. Use our form or call to verify.

How is PHP different from regular therapy?

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is a structured, intensive program with daily group and individual therapy — typically 5 days a week, 6+ hours per day. It provides a higher level of support than weekly therapy appointments.

Can family members be involved in treatment?

Yes. We offer family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom family education groups. These are open to any family member 18+, covering mental health literacy, communication, and support strategies.

What if I’m not sure I need this level of care?

Call us for a free phone screening. Our admissions team can help determine the right level of care based on your symptoms, history, and goals. There’s no obligation.

What makes Trailhead different?
