FDA-Approved Options for Recovery

Trailhead offers five FDA-approved medications for substance use disorders, each prescribed and managed by our on-site Nurse Practitioner. Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) reduces opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms while blocking the effects of other opioids. Subutex (buprenorphine) provides similar relief for clients who cannot tolerate the naloxone component.

Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone) is a once-monthly injection that blocks opioid and alcohol effects entirely — ideal for clients who prefer a non-daily option. Oral Naltrexone offers daily dosing flexibility for alcohol and opioid use disorders. Methadone, coordinated through licensed clinics, remains available for clients who respond best to full agonist therapy.

What's Included

More Than Medication

MAT at Trailhead is never medication alone. Every client receives weekly individual therapy with a licensed clinician using CBT and motivational interviewing. Group therapy sessions — including MAT-specific psychoeducation — help you understand how medication works in your brain and body, reducing stigma and building confidence in your treatment.

Relapse prevention planning, family education sessions, and peer support groups complement the medical component. Your treatment plan integrates medication management with evidence-based behavioral therapy, holistic practices, and life skills development for a whole-person approach to recovery.

Taper or Maintain — You Decide

At Trailhead, medication-assisted treatment respects your autonomy. Some clients use MAT as a bridge — stabilizing on medication, building coping skills, then gradually tapering under medical supervision when they're ready. Others find long-term maintenance is the right path for sustained recovery. Neither choice is better; both are valid, evidence-based approaches.

Your NP and clinical team discuss options openly, provide education on outcomes for both approaches, and support whatever timeline you choose. There is no pressure to taper and no judgment for staying on medication. Your recovery, your body, your decision.

Family Education

Helping Loved Ones Understand

MAT can be misunderstood by families who worry that medication "replaces one addiction with another." Our family education sessions address these concerns directly, explaining the neuroscience behind MAT, how medications work differently than substances of abuse, and why MAT dramatically improves long-term outcomes.

Monthly family support groups via Zoom give loved ones a space to ask questions, share experiences, and learn how to support your recovery without enabling. Individual family therapy sessions are also available to rebuild trust and strengthen relationships damaged by addiction.

Medication Management Process

How MAT Unfolds

01

Assessment

Your NP conducts a comprehensive medical evaluation — substance use history, current medications, health conditions, and treatment goals. Together, you discuss medication options and choose the right fit for your situation and preferences.

02

Induction

Medication begins under close medical supervision. For Suboxone, induction follows careful timing protocols. For Vivitrol, the required opioid-free period is confirmed. Your NP monitors closely during this critical first phase, adjusting as needed.

03

Maintenance

Once stabilized, weekly medication reviews fine-tune your dosing. Therapy, group sessions, and psychoeducation run alongside — building the coping skills and support network that make medication most effective. Side effects are monitored and addressed proactively.

04

Long-Term Planning

Whether you choose to taper gradually or continue maintenance, your NP creates a long-term medication plan. Transition to outpatient prescribers is coordinated seamlessly. Alumni support and ongoing check-ins ensure continuity of care.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

MAT combines FDA-approved medications with behavioral therapy and clinical support to treat substance use disorders. Medications like Suboxone, Vivitrol, and Naltrexone reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing you to focus on recovery through therapy and skill-building.

We offer five FDA-approved options: Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), Subutex (buprenorphine), Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone injection), oral Naltrexone, and Methadone (coordinated through licensed clinics). Your NP helps determine which is right for your situation.

No. MAT medications work differently than substances of abuse. They stabilize brain chemistry, reduce cravings, and block euphoric effects — without producing a high. Research consistently shows MAT reduces overdose deaths, improves treatment retention, and supports long-term recovery.

That's entirely your choice. Some clients use MAT as a bridge and taper gradually under medical supervision. Others find long-term maintenance works best. Both are valid, evidence-based approaches. Your NP supports whatever timeline you choose — no pressure either way.

Yes. MAT integrates with all our program levels — PHP, IOP, and outpatient. Your medication management continues seamlessly regardless of which program intensity is right for you, and carries through as you step down between levels.

Most insurance plans cover MAT. We accept Anthem BCBS, Point 32 (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense NH Medicaid. We verify your coverage before admission — call (857) 312-1697 or use our online form.

Most clients begin medication within 24 to 48 hours of their first call. Our on-site NP conducts the medical evaluation and can initiate medication the same day as your intake, depending on the medication chosen and your clinical needs.

We can continue your existing medication regimen. Our NP coordinates with your current prescriber to ensure a seamless transition, reviews your dosing, and integrates medication management into your broader treatment plan at Trailhead.

Side effects vary by medication but are generally mild — headache, nausea, or constipation are most common. Your NP monitors for side effects at every check-in and adjusts dosing or medication type if needed. Most clients find side effects fade within the first few weeks.

MAT at Trailhead always includes therapy. Every client receives weekly individual therapy, group sessions, psychoeducation about how their medication works, relapse prevention planning, and family education. Medication alone is never the full picture — we treat the whole person.
