Supporting someone who self-harms requires patience, education, and the right approach. Consider these expedition tips.
Discovering a loved one self-harms can be frightening. Avoid reacting with anger, disgust, or panic. Calm, compassionate responses open the door to honest conversation.
Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply listening. Avoid minimizing their pain or offering quick solutions. Validate their emotions even if you don’t fully understand.
Self-harm is often a coping mechanism for overwhelming emotions — not a suicide attempt or attention-seeking behavior. Understanding this distinction is crucial.
Save the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call/text 988), Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741), and Trailhead’s number in your phone. Know when to use each one.
Gently encourage treatment without issuing ultimatums. Offer to help research programs, make calls, or attend the first appointment together.
You can’t lead an expedition if you’re exhausted. Seek your own therapy, attend support groups, and set boundaries to protect your own mental health.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+. (857) 312-1697
When a loved one won’t accept help for self-harm, these structured communication steps can make a difference.
Self-harm tends to escalate without intervention. Don’t wait for a medical emergency. Start gathering information and preparing to have the conversation now.
Express concern without judgment. Say “I’ve noticed you’re hurting, and I care about you” instead of “Why are you doing this to yourself?” Avoid shaming language.
Boundaries aren’t ultimatums — they’re statements of what you will and won’t accept. Enforce them consistently with love and follow through.
A licensed therapist or counselor can help facilitate a conversation and assess risk level. Our admissions team can guide you through next steps.
If there’s immediate danger — severe self-harm, suicidal statements, or an active crisis — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. For guidance on next steps, call us at (857) 312-1697.
Our admissions team can guide you through next steps — even if your loved one isn’t ready yet.
☎ Call (857) 312-1697You don’t have to navigate this terrain alone. Our family program provides education, support, and community.
Self-harm is the act of intentionally injuring oneself as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions, numbness, or psychological pain. It is not a suicide attempt, though it increases suicide risk. Common forms include cutting, burning, hitting, and scratching.
No referral is needed. You can call us directly at (857) 312-1697 for a confidential assessment. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988 for immediate support.
Most major plans are accepted including Anthem BCBS, Point 32, Tricare, and WellSense NH Medicaid. Mental health treatment has parity protections under federal law. Use our verification form or call to check your coverage.
Yes. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Mon–Thu) is specifically designed for working adults who need treatment without disrupting their careers.
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is the primary evidence-based treatment for self-harm. It teaches distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. We also use CBT, safety planning, and individualized crisis management.
While no medication specifically treats self-harm, SSRIs (like sertraline or fluoxetine) and mood stabilizers can help manage underlying depression, anxiety, or mood instability that drives self-harm urges. Our NP evaluates each client individually.
A safety plan is a personalized, written plan developed with your therapist that identifies warning signs, coping strategies, people to contact for support, and steps to take during a crisis. It’s a core part of self-harm treatment at Trailhead.
Yes. We offer family therapy and monthly Zoom family education groups open to any family member 18+, covering communication, crisis response, and understanding self-harm behaviors.
Clients step down to IOP or OP, join our alumni program, receive external therapist referrals, and maintain access to their safety plan and family support groups for continued growth.
DBT-focused programming, individualized safety planning, staff trained in self-harm and crisis intervention, 12:1 counselor caseloads, flexible scheduling, and same-day admissions when clinically appropriate.
