Field Guide for Families

How to Help a Loved One

Supporting someone through a mental health crisis requires preparation. Consider these expedition tips.

1

Educate Yourself

Learn about their specific condition — depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, or OCD. Understanding the science helps reduce stigma and opens the door to compassion.

2

Listen Without Fixing

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is listen. Resist the urge to offer solutions. Validate their experience: “That sounds really difficult.”

3

Set Boundaries with Compassion

Clear boundaries protect both of you. Be firm yet loving — “I love you, and I need you to get professional help for this.”

4

Join Family Therapy

Trailhead offers monthly Zoom family education groups. Open to all family members 18+. Curriculum covers communication, boundaries, and understanding mental health conditions.

5

Take Care of Yourself

You can’t lead an expedition if you’re exhausted. Seek your own therapy, join a support group like NAMI, and prioritize your own mental health too.

6

Know the Warning Signs

Familiarize yourself with crisis indicators: talk of hopelessness, giving away possessions, sudden calmness after depression, or increased isolation. These warrant immediate action.

Our family support program is open to all family members 18+. (857) 312-1697

When They’re Not Ready

What If They Refuse Treatment?

When a loved one struggling with mental health won’t accept help, these structured communication steps can make a difference.

Step 01 — Recon

Don’t Wait for a Crisis

Mental health conditions typically worsen without treatment. You don’t need to wait for a breakdown or hospitalization. Earlier intervention leads to better outcomes and faster recovery.

Step 02 — Approach

Use Compassionate Language

Express concern without judgment. Use “I’ve noticed you seem really overwhelmed lately” instead of “You need to fix this.” Normalize treatment as strength, not weakness.

Step 03 — Establish Perimeter

Set Clear Boundaries

Boundaries aren’t ultimatums — they’re statements of what you will and won’t accept. Enforce them consistently with love and follow through.

Step 04 — Call for Backup

Involve Their Support System

Sometimes hearing concern from multiple loved ones helps. A family meeting or structured conversation — facilitated by a professional if needed — can break through resistance.

Step 05 — Emergency Protocol

Know When to Call for Help

If there’s immediate danger — suicidal statements, self-harm, psychotic episode, or inability to care for themselves — call 911 or 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. For guidance on next steps, call us at (857) 312-1697.

Our admissions team can guide you through next steps — even if your loved one isn’t ready yet.
