Supporting someone with PTSD requires patience and understanding. Here are evidence-based approaches to help.
Never pressure someone with PTSD to share details about their trauma. Let them open up on their own timeline. Simply being present and available is powerful support.
Learn what situations, sounds, smells, or environments trigger your loved one’s PTSD symptoms. Help them plan around known triggers when possible, without being controlling.
Emotional numbness and detachment are core PTSD symptoms — not a reflection of how they feel about you. Don’t take it personally. It’s a protective response to trauma.
Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups. These help families understand PTSD, triggers, and how to create a supportive home environment.
Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, set healthy boundaries, and maintain your own routines. Caregiver burnout is real — you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Gently encourage your loved one to seek professional treatment. Use “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you’re struggling and I care about you” rather than “You need to get help.”
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for people with PTSD to resist treatment. Avoidance is a core symptom of the disorder itself. This doesn’t mean recovery is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.
People with PTSD often feel they should be able to “handle it on their own.” Acknowledge their strength while gently noting that professional support can help them move forward faster.
Reduce stigma by framing therapy as something strong people do. PTSD is a medical condition with proven treatments — not a sign of weakness.
The hardest part is often making the first call. Offer to sit with them while they call, or call on their behalf with their permission.
Trauma processing must begin only when the person is ready and willing. Pushing too hard can reinforce avoidance. Meet them where they are.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe dissociation, or risk of harm — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Our admissions team can guide you through next steps, discuss how to approach a loved one with PTSD, and help you prepare for when they’re ready to accept help.

We provide PTSD treatment for adults throughout greater New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. No substance use diagnosis is required — our mental health track serves individuals with PTSD as a primary condition.

Dually licensed in New Hampshire and Massachusetts — serving clients from both states.
PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as combat, sexual assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, childhood abuse, or any situation where your life or safety felt threatened. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD — factors like genetics, prior trauma, support systems, and coping resources all play a role.
It’s normal to experience distress after a traumatic event — difficulty sleeping, intrusive thoughts, and heightened anxiety are common in the weeks following trauma. PTSD is diagnosed when these symptoms persist for more than one month and significantly interfere with daily functioning, relationships, or work. If symptoms aren’t resolving on their own, professional evaluation is recommended.
We use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) as a primary evidence-based treatment for PTSD, along with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation, and trauma-focused group work. Holistic approaches including breathwork, yoga, and meditation are integrated to help regulate the nervous system. All trauma processing is done at a pace that feels safe for you.
Our on-site Nurse Practitioner can prescribe medications commonly used for PTSD, including SSRIs such as sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil), which are FDA-approved for PTSD treatment. Prazosin may also be prescribed to reduce trauma-related nightmares. All medication is combined with therapy for a comprehensive approach, and decisions are made collaboratively with you.
PTSD treatment typically spans 8–16 weeks, though this varies based on individual needs and trauma complexity. Our PHP program usually lasts 20–30 days, followed by a step-down to IOP (60–90 days) and then outpatient care. Complex trauma may require a longer treatment arc and coordination with external trauma specialists.
When done carefully and by trained clinicians, trauma processing does not re-traumatize. At Trailhead, we only begin trauma processing when it is clinically appropriate and when you explicitly consent. We start with stabilization and coping skills before gradually approaching trauma material. You are always in control of the pace, and your clinician will monitor your readiness throughout treatment.
Co-occurring PTSD and substance use is very common — up to 50% of people seeking substance use treatment also have PTSD. At Trailhead, we treat both conditions simultaneously through integrated programming. You do not need a substance use diagnosis to receive PTSD treatment, but if both are present, we address them together for the best outcomes.
Yes — family involvement is encouraged. We offer individual family therapy sessions coordinated with your primary therapist, plus monthly family education groups via Zoom. These groups help families understand PTSD, learn to recognize triggers, and build a supportive home environment. Open to any family member 18+.
Most major insurance plans cover PTSD treatment, including mental health parity protections under federal law. We are in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense (NH Medicaid).
