Breathwork, yoga, and meditation integrated into daily programming — teaching your nervous system to self-regulate without relying on medication alone.

Supporting someone through an anxiety disorder requires understanding, patience, and the right approach.
Anxiety isn’t something they can “just get over.” Their physical symptoms — racing heart, shortness of breath, nausea — are real, not imagined. Validate their experience.
There’s a difference between helping them avoid everything that triggers anxiety (accommodation) and helping them gradually face fears with support. Learn where the line is.
Gently suggest speaking with a professional. Offer to help research options, make calls, or attend the first appointment with them. Remove barriers to getting started.
Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups. Learn how family dynamics can inadvertently reinforce anxiety patterns.
Anxiety causes measurable physical changes — elevated cortisol, increased heart rate, muscle tension, digestive issues. Understanding the biology helps reduce stigma and frustration.
Supporting someone with chronic anxiety is draining. Maintain your own routines, boundaries, and mental health. Consider therapy for yourself or join a support group.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for people with anxiety disorders to avoid treatment — avoidance is a core feature of anxiety itself. This doesn’t mean they don’t want help — the process of seeking treatment can feel overwhelming.
Frame treatment as a practical skill-building process, not a sign of weakness. Anxiety is the most common mental health condition — 40 million adults experience it.
Suggest a single phone call or telehealth session rather than a full program commitment. Once they experience the supportive environment, resistance often decreases.
Are they afraid of group therapy? Being judged? Medication? Understanding their specific barrier helps you address it directly rather than with general encouragement.
Using “I” statements, share how their untreated anxiety affects you and the family. “I notice we’ve stopped going out together” is more effective than “You need help.”
If anxiety leads to suicidal thoughts, self-medication with alcohol or drugs, or complete inability to function — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Our admissions team can guide you through next steps, discuss how to approach the conversation, and help you prepare for when your loved one is ready to accept help.

Topics include understanding anxiety disorders, accommodation vs. support, family systems, and building a recovery-supportive home.
Trailhead Treatment Center is located in the medical and behavioral health corridor of Salem, New Hampshire. We provide anxiety disorder treatment for adults throughout greater New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts.
Conveniently accessible via I-93 and Route 28, with clients commuting from:
Dually licensed in New Hampshire and Massachusetts — serving clients from both states.
Normal worry is temporary, proportional to the situation, and doesn’t interfere with daily life. An anxiety disorder involves persistent, excessive worry that is difficult to control, lasts for months, and significantly impacts your ability to work, maintain relationships, or enjoy daily activities. If worry feels constant, disproportionate, or accompanied by physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat or muscle tension, it may be time to seek help.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the gold standard for anxiety treatment, with the strongest research evidence. We also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for distress tolerance and emotion regulation, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for psychological flexibility, and breathwork, yoga, and meditation for nervous system regulation. Our approach combines multiple modalities tailored to your specific type of anxiety.
While benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan) provide fast relief, they carry significant risks: physical dependence can develop in as little as 2–4 weeks, withdrawal can be dangerous, and long-term use may worsen anxiety. Instead, our NP prescribes SSRIs, SNRIs, and buspirone — medications that address anxiety without addiction risk — combined with CBT and DBT skills that provide lasting relief without dependence.
Our structured programs provide daily practice of anxiety management skills in a supportive environment. PHP (5 days/week) and IOP (3 days/week) offer group CBT and DBT sessions, individual therapy, breathwork and meditation practice, gradual exposure exercises, and NP-managed medication. The consistency of daily skills practice accelerates progress compared to weekly outpatient therapy alone.
Exposure therapy involves gradually and safely confronting the situations, objects, or thoughts that trigger your anxiety. This is done at your pace with clinician support — never forced. Over time, repeated exposure reduces the anxiety response. We integrate exposure techniques into our CBT framework, tailored to your specific anxiety triggers, whether social situations, phobias, or generalized worry.
We integrate evidence-based holistic practices including diaphragmatic breathwork (activates the parasympathetic nervous system), yoga (reduces cortisol and muscle tension), guided meditation and mindfulness (builds present-moment awareness), and experiential activities like hiking and equine therapy. These practices complement clinical therapy by teaching your body to self-regulate its stress response.
Yes. Many people with anxiety disorders use alcohol or other substances to self-medicate. Our integrated treatment approach addresses both simultaneously — treating anxiety and substance use together produces better outcomes than addressing them separately. You can enter through either our mental health track or substance use track, and receive comprehensive co-occurring care.
CBT for anxiety typically shows meaningful results in 8–12 sessions. Our PHP program runs 4–6 weeks, IOP runs 8–12 weeks, followed by ongoing outpatient maintenance as needed. Most clients benefit from a step-down approach — starting with higher intensity and gradually reducing structure as skills become more automatic. Medication adjustments may take 4–6 weeks to reach full effect.
Most major insurance plans cover anxiety disorder treatment at the PHP, IOP, and OP levels. We are in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense (NH Medicaid). Mental health parity laws require insurers to cover mental health treatment at the same level as medical treatment. Call (857) 312-1697 or use our online form to verify your benefits.
No referral is needed — you can call us directly. And no, you do not need a substance use diagnosis. Our mental health track accepts clients with anxiety disorders as a primary diagnosis. Whether your anxiety is standalone or co-occurring with depression, PTSD, or substance use, we have a treatment pathway for you.
Your path to managing anxiety begins with a single phone call. We’ll handle the rest.
