Many families struggle to address marijuana use because it’s often minimized as harmless. Here are evidence-based approaches to help.
Cannabis use disorder is a real, diagnosable condition. Don’t dismiss it as “just weed.” When someone can’t stop despite wanting to, or their life is declining because of use, it’s a problem that deserves attention.
Watch for loss of motivation, declining performance at work or school, memory problems, social withdrawal, and emotional flatness. These cognitive and behavioral changes are real effects of chronic marijuana use.
Your loved one may insist marijuana is “harmless” or “natural.” Acknowledge their perspective, then gently point to the specific ways their life has changed since use escalated.
Trailhead offers individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, family systems, and substance use education.
Your mental health matters too. The frustration of watching someone you love lose ambition and engagement with life takes a toll. Consider therapy for yourself and maintain your own boundaries.
Choose a calm moment. Focus on specific observations: “I’ve noticed you’ve stopped doing things you used to enjoy” rather than “You smoke too much.” Offer concrete help like calling together.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients.
Call for Family SupportIt’s especially common for people struggling with marijuana addiction to resist treatment. Many don’t believe marijuana dependence is “real” addiction, making it harder to accept that they need help. This doesn’t mean recovery is impossible — it means a different approach may be needed.
Rather than debating whether marijuana is “addictive,” point to concrete life changes: lost motivation, strained relationships, declining performance, or emotional numbness.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change.
Follow through on consequences you’ve communicated. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change.
People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, severe anxiety episodes, or risk of harm — call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Our admissions team can guide you through next steps, discuss approaches for someone who doesn’t believe marijuana is a problem, and help you prepare for when your loved one is ready to accept help.

While marijuana is often perceived as harmless, today’s marijuana products are significantly more potent than in previous decades — with THC concentrations 3 to 5 times higher than in the 1990s. Cannabis use disorder is a recognized diagnosis in the DSM-5, and approximately 30% of people who use marijuana develop some degree of use disorder. When someone can’t stop despite negative consequences to their relationships, career, motivation, or mental health, professional treatment can help them build the skills to move forward.
Marijuana dependence is primarily psychological, but it does have physical components. Regular users often experience irritability, insomnia, decreased appetite, anxiety, and restlessness when they stop using. While these withdrawal symptoms are generally less severe than those from alcohol or opioids, they are real and can make quitting difficult without support. Our treatment addresses both the psychological patterns that drive use and the physical discomfort during the adjustment period.
Medical detox is generally not required for marijuana. Unlike alcohol or benzodiazepines, marijuana withdrawal is not medically dangerous. However, withdrawal symptoms like insomnia, irritability, and anxiety can be uncomfortable. Our Nurse Practitioner can prescribe supportive medications to manage these symptoms while you begin therapy and skill-building in our PHP or IOP programs.
Yes. Cannabis use disorder is a clinically recognized condition in the DSM-5, the standard diagnostic manual used by mental health professionals worldwide. It is defined by a problematic pattern of cannabis use leading to significant impairment or distress, with criteria including inability to cut back, cravings, tolerance, withdrawal, and continued use despite negative consequences. It ranges from mild to severe based on the number of criteria met.
In the 1990s, average THC content in marijuana was around 4%. Today, flower commonly contains 15–25% THC, and concentrates (dabs, wax, oils) can exceed 90% THC. Higher potency means faster tolerance development, stronger dependence, more intense withdrawal symptoms, and greater risk of anxiety and psychotic episodes. The marijuana people used decades ago is fundamentally different from what’s available today.
Cognitive improvements begin within the first few weeks of abstinence. Most people notice better memory, concentration, and mental clarity within 2–4 weeks. However, research suggests that full cognitive recovery — particularly in areas of memory and executive function — can take several months, especially for long-term or heavy users. Our treatment program supports this recovery process through structured therapeutic activities and skill-building exercises.
If you’re asking this question, you likely already sense that your marijuana use has become a problem. Treatment isn’t about how “serious” a substance is — it’s about whether a pattern of use is negatively affecting your life. If marijuana has become your primary way of coping with stress, sleeping, socializing, or managing emotions, treatment helps you develop healthier strategies so you can regain control and re-engage with your life.
Absolutely. Our Evening Professional Track (6–9 PM, Monday through Thursday) is specifically designed for working adults. We also offer afternoon IOP sessions and telehealth options. You can switch between time slots daily based on your work schedule.
Most major insurance plans cover treatment for cannabis use disorder, just as they cover other substance use disorders. We are in-network with Anthem BCBS, Point 32 Health (Harvard Pilgrim + Tufts), Tricare, Uprise Health, and WellSense (NH Medicaid). Our admissions team can verify your benefits in minutes — call (857) 312-1697 or use our online form.
We use a combination of evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), relapse prevention, and holistic approaches like breathwork, yoga, and meditation. We also focus heavily on identifying and treating underlying conditions like anxiety and depression that often drive marijuana use.
Your recovery begins with a single phone call. We’ll handle the rest.
