A structured, guided intervention led by a certified specialist can break through denial and help your loved one see the real impact of their opioid use on themselves and those around them. Professional interventionists know how to frame the conversation with compassion rather than confrontation.
Rather than confrontation, express concern with empathy. Motivational interviewing techniques focus on their own reasons for wanting change. Ask open-ended questions: “What would your life look like without opioids?” Let them arrive at their own motivation.
Follow through on consequences you’ve communicated. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change. Be specific: “If I find opioids in the house, I will stay at my sister’s.” Then follow through consistently — empty threats enable continued use.
People move through precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Your loved one may not be ready for action yet — but that doesn’t mean they won’t be. Meeting them where they are is more effective than pushing them where you want them to be.
If there’s immediate danger — suicidal thoughts, signs of overdose (blue lips, slow breathing, unresponsiveness), or risk of harm to self or others — call 911 immediately. Administer Narcan (naloxone) if available. Opioid overdose can be fatal within minutes.
